12:38-44

Mt 9:9-13

R. (23b) To the upright I will show the saving power of God.

God the LORD has spoken and summoned the earth,
from the rising of the sun to its setting.
"Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you,
for your holocausts are before me always."

"If I were hungry, I would not tell you,
for mine are the world and its fullness.
Do I eat the flesh of strong bulls,
or is the blood of goats my drink?"

"Offer to God praise as your sacrifice
and fulfill your vows to the Most High;
Then call upon me in time of distress;
I will rescue you, and you shall glorify me."

SAINT OF THE WEEK

June 11th. St. Barnabas

The name Barnabas means 'Son of Consolation'. According to the New
Testament, Barnabas was a Jew from Cyprus and a Levite (in later
Jewish times, the guardian of a local shrine). He converted to
Christ and was close to, but not one of, the twelve apostles. He
was also instrumental in introducing Paul to the apostles after
Paul's own conversion and time of reflection in the desert.
Thereafter Barnabas' name is closely linked to Paul; the two of
them were sent to Antioch, the Syrian city where believers were
first called "Christians", and then on the first recognised
missionary journey (to Cyprus and South/Central Turkey, to use
modern names). Barnabas was present at the Council of Jerusalem
which debated the question: should non-Jewish converts to Christ be
obliged to adopt Jewish ways? Barnabas supported the (winning)
negative view. Later on, Paul and Barnabas seem to have quarrelled;
Silas (Sylvanus) became Paul's companion and Barnabas returned to
his native Cyprus to spread the word more extensively. Reading
between the lines of Paul's letters, he seems to have gone further
afield, too. He is believed to have been martyred in Cyprus, at
Salamis in AD61. Barnabas, to judge by all the evidence, was a true
pillar of the growing infant Church.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Martyr of the Amazon: The Life of Sister Dorothy Stang," by Sister
Roseanne Murphy. Orbis Book, 2007.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ref=noism/1570757356/christia
nspiritu/

Sister Dorothy Stang, a sister of Notre Dame de Namur, gave four
decades of her life to assist the poor in the Brazilian Amazon
region and was brutally murdered for her efforts. Steeped in the
Gospel of Jesus, her every fiber radiated love, concern, and care
for the least of God's children and the wondrous Amazonian rain
forests.

At sixteen, Dorothy entered the Notre Dame convent and was trained
to be a teacher. She was well liked by her students and she loved
every one of them. But there was in her heart, a bigger desire;
hers was to be a broader visita than teaching in the States. She
longed to give her life in a foreign country. Hence when the
community was asked to send missionaries to South America, she was
eager to be one of the volunteers.

Amid extreme difficulties, she won the hearts of the poor and
oppressed in the rain forests along the Amazon. The homesteads of
the poor were been deforested and turned into ranches; the lands of
the poor with their houses and gardens were burned and demolished
without any recourse to authorities. Those who resisted were
murdered or "disappeared." She spoke out against such injustices
numerous times and promises were made, only to be broken. But
Sister Dorothy never gave up. A lover of nature, she loved the rain
forests and delighted in being among the beautiful trees God had
created.

Gunmen were hired to kill her. When they approached her on a lonely
road, they asked if she was armed. She held up her Bible and began
reading the Beatitudes, "Blessed are the poor in spirit. Blessed
are those who hunger and thirst for justice... Blessed are the
peace makers..." And they shot her, not once, but many times. And
left her bleeding on the lands she loved so much. She was buried
among "her" people, the poor, along the Amazon.

SPIRITUAL ENRICHMENT RESOURCE

"Here Now in Love: the roots of contemplative spirituality"
by Philip St. Romain

An uncomplicated but significant collection of principles that will
help foster a contemplative focus in one's spiritual life. This
book is built on the conviction that if we are to know God, then we
must be where God is, or we will miss him; we must also strive to
be as God or we will not recognize him. This is not a new
spirituality but a common vocation of us all: To love God with our
whole heart and soul and mind and strength and our neighbor as
ourselves.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- Good thinking!

Before going to Europe on business, a man drives his Rolls-Royce to
a downtown New York City bank and asks for an immediate loan of
$5,000. The loan officer, taken aback, requests collateral. "Well
then, here are the keys to my Rolls-Royce," the man says. The loan
officer promptly has the car driven into the bank's underground
parking for safe keeping and gives the man the $5,000. Two weeks
later, the man walks through the bank's doors and asks to settle up
his loan and get his car back. "That will be $5,000 in principal,
and $15.40 in interest," the loan officer says. The man writes out
a check and starts to walk away. "Wait, sir," the loan officer
says. "You are a millionaire. Why in the world would you need to
borrow $5,000?" The man smiles, "Where else could I find a safer
place to park my Rolls-Royce in Manhattan for two weeks and pay
only $15.40?"
