R. (3b) Lord, be my rock of safety.
In you, O LORD, I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame.
In your justice rescue me,
incline your ear to me,
make haste to deliver me!
Be my rock of refuge,
a stronghold to give me safety.
You are my rock and my fortress;
for your name's sake you will lead and guide me.
Let your face shine upon your servant;
save me in your kindness.
Take courage and be stouthearted,
all you who hope in the LORD.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- June 4th. St. Petroc.
The abbot Petroc is probably Cornwall's best-known saint. He was a
native of South Wales, and lived in the 6th. century. He arrived in
Cornwall at Hayle and founded a monastery at a spot later called
Petroc's Stow, i.e. Padstow, on the north coast. A further
foundation followed at Little Petherick, not far away, as well as
smaller hermitages. Petroc took to living as a hermit on the wilds
of Bodmin Moor; he is not the only Celtic saint to have had a
particular ability to tame wild animals, and his emblem is a stag,
in commemoration of one which he protected from huntsmen. The cult
of St. Petroc became widespread in Devon and Cornwall, in South
Wales and in Brittany, even becoming recognised in Italy. His
relics became the object of an undignified push-me-pull-you between
Cornwall and Brittany: initially at Bodmin, they were secreted out
of the country in 1177 and it required the intervention of King
Henry II to get them returned. In reparation, William, Bishop of
Coutances, presented to the Cornish people a fine ivory reliquary:
it was hidden at the Reformation, rediscovered in the 19th century,
and survives, a remarkable example of medieval art, in Bodmin church.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"The Voice of Blood, five Christian martyrs of our time," by
William O'Mailey SJ. Orbis Books, 1980.

Christian missionaries of many denominations have found that it is
dangerous to work among and for the poor. O'Malley gives the
stories of five heroic Jesuits who gave their all that others might
have a better way of life. These martyrs are: Rutilio Grande in El
Salvador; three heroes in Rhodesia: John Conway, Martin Thomas, and
Christopher Shepherd-Smith; and one Jesuit martyr in Brazil, John
Bosco Burnier. These five were killed simply because they insisted
on exercising their religious freedom and preaching about
Christianity's messages.
These deaths of men, none of whom considered themselves as heroes,
occurred in the first three months of 1977. Rutillo Grande never
considered himself worthy of ordination yet was wifling to make the
Gospel real for the poor, and to convince Archbishop Romero that
simple living was appropriate for those who served the poor Christ.
Christopher Shepherd was not particularly talented yet he lived a
tremendous life for the poor. Martin Thomas was quite at home being
at a distant from humanity except when humanity was those who were
suffering under tyrants. John Bosco Burnier was a disaster as vice
provincial and as master of novices, yet he begged to go the Brazil
to minister to the those suffering so horribly under unjust
administrations. He was killed trying to have two women released
who had been unjustly incarcerated.
This book is a powerful suspense story, a statement about the
violent world in which we live, a story of great religious men
uplifted by the horror of the events into which they were immersed.
These men were blind to many things but not to injustice. "Some men
will die with their slippers on." These five were not of that
caliber, in slippered feet curled up on a divan watching
television. They were in the field ministering to the least of
Christ's little ones, the poor, and being willing to give their
life's blood for others under unjust regimes

JOKE OF THE WEEK
Grandpa was celebrating his 100th birthday and everybody
complimented him on how athletic and well-preserved he appeared.
"Gentlemen, I will tell you the secret of my success," he cackled.
"I have been in the open air day after day for some 75 years now."
The celebrants were impressed and asked how he managed to keep up
his rigorous fitness regime.
"Well, you see my wife and I were married 75 years ago. On our
wedding night, we made a solemn pledge. Whenever we had a fight,
the one who was proved wrong would go outside and take a walk."
