WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Acts 28:16-20, 30-31; Ps. 11:4, 5 and 7; Jn 21:20-25
Sunday: Genesis 11:1-9; Ps 104:1-2, 24, 35, 27-30; Rom
8:22-27; Jn 7:37-39
R. (cf. 30) Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the
earth.
Bless the LORD, O my soul!
O LORD, my God, you are great indeed!
You are clothed with majesty and glory,
robed in light as with a cloak.
How manifold are your works, O LORD!
In wisdom you have wrought them all
the earth is full of your creatures;
bless the LORD, O my soul! Alleluia.
Creatures all look to you
to give them food in due time.
When you give it to them, they gather it;
when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.
If you take away their breath, they perish
and return to their dust.
When you send forth your spirit, they are created,
and you renew the face of the earth.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- May 15th. St. Pachomius.
St. Antony of Egypt is usually called the 'founder of monasticism',
although he was a hermit who later travelled to give encouragement
to other religious living in isolated cells in the Egyptian desert.
However, the title really belongs to Pachomius, who became a
Christian in Egypt on leaving the army in 313. He too began as a
hermit, but soon made use of exceptional administrative gifts to
bring together communities of men and women, beginning in 320. They
were organised on very practical lines, according to the trades
which the monks practised to earn funds to support their life.
There was a certain military precision in Pachomius' method; monks
could be transferred from one community to another; each house was
given a local superior and all leaders met twice annually, to
render an account of their community life. Pachomius' rule was thus
highly centralised and disciplined, as well as being austere,
though not extreme (unlike some of the hermitages). St. Jerome
translated Pachomius' Rule into Latin, thus making it widely
available; it influenced the later and more widespread Rules of
Basil and Benedict. He died in 346.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
Thomas Merton: Master of Attention, by Robert Waldron. Paulist, 2008.

nspiritu/
Thomas Merton wrote over forty books on the importance of
reflection and prayer in the inner life of the Christian, yet
little did he write on his own way of prayer. Waldron, a lay
monastic, focuses on Merton's life and prayer in a new and exciting
way. The author attempts to let the readers know more deeply the
man who sacrificed everything to pursue, " God Alone."
Waldron admits that although Merton wrote much about prayer, his
writings always seem to be in the abstract. Was Merton trying to
assure his readers that he had not yet found the one and only
successful technique of prayer? Perhaps.
As a mystic, Merton had found Christ through aesthetics, by
attention to Christ's beauty in art, in Byzantine mosaics, in
Gregorian chant, and in poetry. As a monk, he struggled with this
question: "What is contemplation?" Waidron believes the answer lies
in HOW Thomas Merton lived.
Waidron says he had two purposes in writing this book: to offer a
new perspective on Merton and his prayer life to encourage people
not to give up on prayer, because prayer is available to everyone.

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK
Wisdom Christianity
- http://www.bedegriffiths.com/wisdom-christianity.html
A collection of articles on the website appreciative of the life
and work of Bede Griffiths. These articles are "meat and
potatoes," so don't go expecting light-hearted inspiration with
Flash presentations and music. They're well worth your while,
however. The one on "Christianity in the Light of Asian Non
Duality" is especially relevant given the popularity of authors
like Eckhart Tolle.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
A little boy opened the big old family Bible and with fascination,
he looked at the old pages as he turned them. Then something fell
out of the Bible and he picked it up and looked at it closely. It
was an old leaf from a tree that had been pressed in between the
pages.
"Momma, look what I found," the boy called out.
"What have you got there?" his mother asked.
With astonishment in the young boy's voice he answered: "It's
Adam's suit!"
