Sunday: Dt 8:2-3, 14b-16a; Ps 147:12-13, 14-15, 19-20; 1

R. (12) Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.

Glorify the LORD, O Jerusalem;
praise your God, O Zion.
For he has strengthened the bars of your gates;
he has blessed your children within you.

He has granted peace in your borders;
with the best of wheat he fills you.
He sends forth his command to the earth;
swiftly runs his word!

He has proclaimed his word to Jacob,
his statutes and his ordinances to Israel.
He has not done thus for any other nation;
his ordinances he has not made known to them. Alleluia.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

May 28th. St. Bernard of Aosta [Bernard of Menthon].
Claimed as a national by both French and Italians, hence the
variant of his name, he was in fact probably of Italian origin, and
was ordained in the diocese of Aosta, in the extreme N.W. of Italy
above Turin and towards the St. Bernard Pass. He was later
Vicar-General of the diocese and was distinguished for his 42 years
of systematic visitations, preaching, and foundation of schools and
churches. He had a particular concern for travellers across the
Alps, who were much at risk from snowdrifts and highway robbers.
He founded a number of refuges or guest-houses, staffed by Austin
Canons, to guard the Alpine routes; these Canons developed the
specially trained breed of rescue dog, with their famous brandy
barrels, called the 'St. Bernard' after this saint. He died in
1081. In 1923, Pope Pius XI, an enthusiastic mountain climber,
named him patron of all mountaineers.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"An Invitation to the Contemplative Life," by Thomas Merton and
Wayne Simsic. The Word Among Us Press, 2006.
- http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ref=noism/1593250851/christianspiritu/

This book includes some of Thomas Merton's most enduring
meditations, providing a unique approach to this Trappist monk's
spiritual life. The editor hopes readers will grow in freedom,
self-knowledge, and in love of God as they too move into the
unknown in their quest for God.

Love and insecurity were threads in Merton's youth. His loss of
both parents and a sibling marked him early in life as an orphan,
and as a man who would continue on pilgrimage until his untimely
death in 1968 in Bangkok, where he as a Trappist monk had given a
final talk on the inner transformation which is at the heart of the
monastic vow.

The sections of this book gives some of his writings which relate
to the search for freedom, the contemplative way, the person of
Christ, solitude and silence, love of nature, community life, work,
social concerns, and the call to prophecy.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

A man mentioned to his landlord about the tenants in the apartment
over his. "Many a night they stamp on the floor and shout till
midnight." When the landlord asked if it bothered him, he replied,
"Not really, for I usually stay up and practice my trumpet till
about that time most every night anyway."

A man goes to see his doctor. The doctor asks what is wrong and the
man says, "Doctor, I think I'm a moth." To this the doctor
responds, "You think you're a moth? Well I don't think you need a
doctor. Sounds like what you need is a therapist." "Yeah I know,"
replies the patient. "I was on my way to see a therapist, but I
came in here because I saw your light was on."
