WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: Acts 9:31-42; Ps. 116:12-13, 14-15, 16-17; Jn
6:60-69
Sunday: Acts 2:14a, 36-41; Ps. 23: 1-3a, 3b4, 5, 6; 1 Pt
2:20b-25; Jn 10:1-10

R. (1) The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
In verdant pastures he gives me repose;
beside restful waters he leads me;
he refreshes my soul.

He guides me in right paths
for his name's sake.
Even though I walk in the dark valley
I fear no evil; for you are at my side.
With your rod and your staff
that give me courage.

You spread the table before me
in the sight of my foes;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.

Only goodness and kindness follow me
all the days of my life;
and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD
for years to come.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- April 16th. St. Magnus.

St. Magnus came from the Orkney Islands, and was born in about
1075, son of one of the two Viking rulers of the Orkneys. His early
life was spent in piracy, but he was then converted to
Christianity. Captured by the King of Norway, he was compelled to
take part in pirate raids on the west coast of Britain, but on one
occasion, in Anglesey, he refused to join in and stayed on his boat
reading the Psalms. This should have brought about his death, but
he contrived to escape and make his way to the court of the King of
Scotland, Malcolm III, where he lived as a penitent. Later he was
to return to the Orkneys and set about sharing the government of
the islands with his cousin, Haakon. His cousin's henchmen ended
this arrangement by murdering him, and he died praying for his
killers. He is the patron of the Orkney and Shetland Islands and
the North of Scotland, and his relics were rediscovered in St.
Magnus' Cathedral, Kirkwall, during rebuilding in 1919. There is
also a church dedicated to him near London Bridge. Tradition has it
that he appeared to Robert the Bruce on the eve of the Battle of
Bannockburn (1314) and promised him a victory.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Thomas Aquinas on the Jews: insights into his commentary on Romans
9-11," by Steven C. Boguslawski OP. Stimulus Books, 2008.
-

nspiritu/

Did Thomas Aquinas join the theologians of his day and frown on the
Jews, thinking they were less than other humans? This book gives a
different story. Even though there were many in his day who thought
of the Jews as less than human, who believed they should be forced
to accept Christianity, and even be kept as slaves, Thomas did not
join this group. In his writings, Thomas even dared to disagree
with his famous teacher, St. Albert the Great.

Basing his writings on Romans 9-11, Thomas belleved that Christ
came to save all peoples and he made this very clear in his Summa.
His was always a positive theology of Judaism. Quoting Romans,
Thomas maintained with Paul, "Theirs were the adoption as God's
children, the glory, the covenants, the law-giving, the worship and
the promises; theirs was the ancestry and from them came the
Messiah, at least according to human ancestry."

The persecution that the Jews endured in his century greatly
disturbed Thomas. He could not understand how anyone could presume
to kidnap Jewish children, have them baptized as Christians, and
keep them forever, thinking erroneously that the kidnappers were
doing God's will. The stance Thomas took did not please many of the
hierarchy of his day, but he stood his ground and presumed to write
eloquently about the dignity of all Jews.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- Watch your step . . .

One night a man stumbled into the police station with a black eye.
He claimed he had heard a noise in his back yard and went to
investigate. The next he knew, he was hit in the eye and knocked
out cold.

An officer was sent to his house to investigate, and he returned 1
1/2 hours later with a black eye.

"Did you get hit by the same person?" his captain asked.

"No," he replied. "But I stepped on the same rake."

- Anniversary Gift

For their anniversary, a couple went out for a romantic dinner.
Their teenage daughters said they would fix a dessert and leave it
waiting.

When they got home, they saw that the dining room table was
beautifully set with china, crystal and candles, and there was a
note that read: "Your dessert is in the refrigerator.

We are staying with friends, so go ahead and do something we
wouldn't do," she giggled.

"I suppose," the husband responded dryly, "we could clean the house."

(Thank you, Paula)
