WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Jer 11:18-20; Ps. 7:2-3, 9bc-10, 11-12; Jn 7:40-53
Sunday: Ez 37:12-14; Ps 130:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8; Rom
8:8-11; Jn 11:1-45
R. (7) With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption.
Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD;
LORD, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
to my voice in supplication.
If you, O LORD, mark iniquities,
LORD, who can stand?
But with you is forgiveness,
that you may be revered.
I trust in the LORD;
my soul trusts in his word.
More than sentinels wait for the dawn,
let Israel wait for the LORD.
For with the LORD is kindness
and with him is plenteous redemption;
And he will redeem Israel
from all their iniquities.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- March 9th.: St. Dominic Savio.
He was born near Turin in 1842, died in 1857 and was canonised in
1954. Before and immediately after his canonisation he was
presented as a role model for the young, especially for boys, but
his influence seems to be fading perhaps in the search for more
rumbustious models. Born to very poor parents, he entered St. John
Bosco's famous Salesian school in Turin at the age of 12. He was
clearly possessed by a particular gift of the Spirit. One says
that he was 'pious' aware that this word conjures up all sorts of
dreaded overtones. In fact the wise influence of St. John Bosco
preventing him ever being anything like a religious version of
Little Lord Fauntleroy. He was noted for his cheerfulness,
friendliness, fidelity to prayer, and reliability as a guide and
counsellor - despite his years - to whom others could turn. Like
the other remarkable holy young man of Turin, Blessed Piergiorgio
Frassati - lover of mountain climbing and fast cars - he showed
that one can be young and holy without being invertebrate. He died
of tuberculosis in his 14th year.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
Gnosticism
A theological error prevalent around the time of Christ. Generally
speaking, Gnosticism taught that salvation is achieved through
special knowledge (gnosis). This knowledge usually dealt with the
individual's relationship to the transcendent Being. It denies the
incarnation of God as the Son. In so doing, it denies the true
efficacy of the atonement since, if Jesus is not God, He could not
atone for all of mankind and we would still be lost in our sins.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
Jews and Chinese
"The Jewish people have observed their 5758th year as a people,"
the Hebrew teacher informed his class. "Consider that the Chinese
have observed only their 4695th. What does this mean to you?"
After a reflective pause, one student volunteered, "Well, for one
thing, the Jewish people had to do without Chinese food for 1063
years."

Smalltown folks
Two small-town merchants were visiting New York City for the first
time to attend a conference. There was a large party thrown, with
lots of food and drink. At the end of the party, they both
staggered outside. One guy crossed the street, while the other
stumbled into a subway entrance. When the first guy reached the
other side of the street, he noticed the other emerging from the
subway stairs.
"Where ya been?" he slurred.
"I don't know," gushed the other guy, "but you should see the train
set that guy has in his basement!"
