Jn 4:5-42
R. (8) If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Come, let us sing joyfully to the LORD;
let us acclaim the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us joyfully sing psalms to him.
Come, let us bow down in worship;
let us kneel before the LORD who made us.
For he is our God,
and we are the people he shepherds, the flock he guides.
Oh, that today you would hear his voice:
"Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,
as in the day of Massah in the desert,
Where your fathers tempted me;
they tested me though they had seen my works."

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- February 25th. St. Walburga
There was an immense missionary drive from England to mainland
Europe in the 8th. century, inspired by the Benedictine monk St.
Boniface from Nursling Abbey near Southampton. Walburga, educated
at Wimborne Abbey in Dorset and highly skilled in medicine, was one
example, rising to the influential post of abbess of the double
monastery (monks and nuns) of Heidenheim in Germany. She was
invoked as a protectress of crops and harvests, possibly a
confusion of her name with 'Walborg' [='Mother Earth']. She also
suffered the indignity of having one of her feast days (May 1)
confused with a pagan ceremony for the approach of summer, the
so-called 'Walpurgisnacht' [Walburga's Night] when witches were
alleged to run riot over the earth This, let it be understood, had
nothing to do with the Christian mission of Walburga herself.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"And There was Light: Blind hero of the French Resistance -
autobiography of Jacquees Lusseyran." Morning Light, 2006.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0930407407/christianspiritu/
Lusseyran tells his own story as the initiator and leader of a
group of young French resistors when Hitler overtook France during
World War II. The author was blind from the age of seven and became
a brilliant student, learning Braille in six weeks, and going on to
become a professor both in France and in the States. He relied on
sounds to bring him information and easily created images in his
mind which afforded him a remarkable memory. He was born in France
in 1924.
Alarmed at the rise of Hitler, Jacques learned German in order to
listen to German broadcasts on the radio. When Germany invaded
France in 1940, he gathered a group of resistors, developed
pamphlets which were distributed freely, and helped train his
followers to rescue friendly pilots who were shot down. He informed
the French about the brutality of Gestapo arrests, persecutions,
and torture of resistance fighters and the arrests of countless Jews.
Eventually he was captured and sent to Buchenwald. When the
Americans defeated Germany, Jacques was released in April of 1945.
As a professor in America, he was killed in an auto accident in 1971.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
The symphony orchestra was performing Beethoven's Ninth.
In the piece, there's a long passage, about 20 minutes, during
which the bass violinists have nothing to do.
Rather than sit around that whole time looking stupid, some
bassists decided to sneak offstage and go to the tavern next door
for a quick one.
After slamming several beers in quick succession, one of them
looked at his watch and said, "Hey! We need to get back!"
"No need to panic," said a fellow bassist. "I thought we might need
some extra time, so I tied the last few pages of the conductor's
score together with string. It'll take him a few minutes to get it
untangled."
A few moments later they staggered back to the concert hall and
took their places in the orchestra.
About this time, a member of the audience noticed the conductor
seemed a bit edgy and said as much to her companion.
"Well, of course," said her companion. "Don't you see? It's the
bottom of the Ninth, the score is tied, and the bassists are loaded."
