R. (cf. 3a) Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.
Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;
in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.
Thoroughly wash me from my guilt
and of my sin cleanse me.
For I acknowledge my offense,
and my sin is before me always:
"Against you only have I sinned,
and done what is evil in your sight."
A clean heart create for me, O God,
and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
Cast me not out from your presence,
and your Holy Spirit take not from me.
Give me back the joy of your salvation,
and a willing spirit sustain in me.
O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- February 11th St. Caedmon, poet-monk of Whitby (Yorks.) (d. 680).
Caedmon was a local herdsman who joined the abbey of Whitby and
enjoyed a great fame as a singer and poet. His poems (which, apart
from a fragment recorded by Bede in his Church history, have not
survived) presented the life of Christ and stories from Genesis and
the Exodus and in an age of illiteracy and non-availability of the
Bible seem to have been as formative of popular faith as
wall-paintings and stained-glass windows in early churches.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"What Are They Saying About Death and Christian Hope?" by Monika K.
Hellwig. Paulist Pres, 1978.
- -
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0809121654/christianspiritu/
At various times in human history, there are those who become
interested in the fate of each person after death. What does
after-life promise; what does it give? Drawing on the wisdom of
theologians such as Karl Rahner, Ladislas Boros, and Gregory Baum,
Hellwig attempts to give a simple and satisfying answer to
questions about life after death. What can Christians hope for
after death?
What is the promise and the vision for the coming reign of God all
about? Theologians have tried to give speculative answers on the
nature of heaven, hell, purgatory, and after-life. Their answers
point to the Christian community's experience and testimony of the
resurrection of Jesus. Hellwig attempts to give new answers in
light of the revelation given from the beginning in Jesus the
Christ, telling her readers that annihilation is never a danger.
Death is the consequence of sin, but annihilation isn't.
The chapter titles seek to answer questions such as: What we would
all like to know, What we can never know, What the Catholic Church
teaches, The death of Jesus and the Resurrection, Beyond the gates
of death, Salvation now and later.
Leaving the readers with many unanswered questions, Hellwig
suggests that "The image of the seed that truly dies in the
transformation to a new life is an apt symbol for a human life
surrendered to death."

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK
Fasting for Lent
- http://www.holyspiritinteractive.net/features/lent/dev_fasting.asp
"For centuries, Christians have observed the season of Lent by
fasting from food and observing other self-denying acts.
"These acts help us become more aware of our true needs. When we
deny ourselves the comforts we are used to--whether a full plate of
food, or some other part of our daily routine (TV, coffee, alcohol,
Internet, etc.)-- we are more mindful of our great need for God.
Also, when we deny our sinful desires, we become more acutely aware
of them, for when they are not fed, they tend to surface in more
noticeable ways. Most importantly, these practices make us mindful
of our need for salvation by Jesus' death on the cross."
(from the web page)
Several practical suggestions for fasting are presented, including
a fast from the media, which is a good one for our age.
A short read and very practical.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Double Trouble
A couple had two naughty little boys, aged 8 and 10, who were
always getting into trouble. The boys' mother heard that there was
a priest in town who was good at correcting children. So, she
decided to send her 8-year-old son in the morning and her
10-year-old in the afternoon.
The priest, a huge man with a loud voice, made the younger boy sit
down and asked him strictly, "Where is God?"
The boy's mouth dropped open, but he sat there, wide-eyed and said
nothing.
So the priest repeated the question in an even louder voice, "Where
is God!!?" Again the boy made no attempt to answer. So the priest
raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy's face
and yelled, "WHERE IS GOD!?"
The boy screamed and ran from the room, directly home and hid in
his cupboard, slamming the door behind him. When his older brother
found him, he asked, "What happened?"
The younger brother, gasping for breath, replied, "We are in BIG
trouble this time, dude. God is missing - and they think WE did it!"
