WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: 1 Sm 9:1-4, 17-19; 10:1; Ps. 21:2-3, 4-5, 6-7; Mk
2:13-17
Sunday: Is 49:3, 5-6; Ps 40:2, 4, 7-8, 8-9, 10; 1 Cor 1:1-3;
Jn 1:29-34
R. (8a and 9a) Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.
I have waited, waited for the LORD,
and he stooped toward me and heard my cry.
And he put a new song into my mouth,
a hymn to our God.
Sacrifice or offering you wished not,
but ears open to obedience you gave me.
Holocausts or sin-offerings you sought not;
then said I, "Behold I come."
"In the written scroll it is prescribed for me,
to do your will, O my God, is my delight,
and your law is within my heart!"
I announced your justice in the vast assembly;
I did not restrain my lips, as you, O LORD, know.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- January 22nd. St. Vincent.
The first declared martyr of Spain, during the persecution of
Diocletian in 304. He was a deacon, trained to serve in the church
in Saragossa [Zaragoza] in Eastern Spain, and was subject to
imprisonment, starvation, the rack and a hot gridiron (in the
manner of St. Laurence) in an effort to make him sacrifice to the
gods. His fame and relics were taken far and wide - according to
St. Augustine "wherever the name of Christ was known"; in England,
notably to Abingdon on Thames-side, thanks to the acquisition of
relics by an Abbot, Faricius.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Aquinas 101: A basic introduction to the thought of Saint Thomas
Aquinas," by Rev. Francis Selman. Christian Classics. 2005.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0870612433/christianspiritu/
Selman provides the reader with basic topics of the writings and
thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. He hopes his readers will include
both beginners in the way of theology and the advanced students.
This book is complete with clear straightforward language and
simple fitting illustrations which will enable readers to acquire a
basic appreciation of the Saint's writings, It will also present
views that relate to contemporary philosophical and theological
discussions. The chapter headings are: How can we know God,
creation, good and evil, word and image, angels, the soul, emotions
and virtues, the Old Law, the sacrament of salvation, the
eucharist, charity and friendship.
By including these varied topics, the author hopes that both the
standard and neglected themes will interest the readers. This makes
this book an engaging, readable, and immensely useful introduction
to the Saint for both beginners and advanced scholars.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
"Did God make you, Grandpa?"
"Yes, God made me" the grandfather answered.
A few minutes later, the little girl asked him, "Did God make me,
too?"
"Yes, He did," the older man replied.
For a few minutes, the little girl seemed to be studying her
grandpa, as well as her own reflection in the mirror, while her
grandfather wondered what was running through her little mind.
At last she spoke up. "You know, Grandpa," she said, "God's doing a
lot better job, lately, isn't he?"
(Ouch!)
