3:22-30

R. (11b) The Lord will bless his people with peace.

Give to the LORD, you sons of God,
give to the LORD glory and praise,
Give to the LORD the glory due his name;
adore the LORD in holy attire.

The voice of the LORD is over the waters,
the LORD, over vast waters.
The voice of the LORD is mighty;
the voice of the LORD is majestic.

The God of glory thunders,
and in his temple all say, "Glory!"
The LORD is enthroned above the flood;
the LORD is enthroned as king forever.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- January 14th. St. Macrina the Elder.

There are two Saints Macrina, one the grandmother of the other. St.
Macrina the elder was the matriarch of a remarkable spiritual
family living in Pontus-in-Asia (modern Northern Turkey, by the
Black Sea), the mother of St. Basil the Great and his younger
brother, the theologian St. Gregory, bishop of Nyssa. These are two
of the so-called 'Cappadocian Fathers'. Macrina herself was a
disciple of the distinguished Bishop of Neo-Caesarea in Pontus, St.
Gregory the Wonderworker (+270). She suffered much for the faith,
including loss of property, but transferred to her children and her
holy grandchild the love of Christ which sustained her. She died in
340.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Craving the Divine: A Spiritual Guide for Today's Perplexed," by
Niles Elliot Goldstein. Hidden Spring, 2007.

This book provides a journey through the wilderness, be that
emotional, existential or geographical. The author claims that such
a journey can be transformative and strengthening. It is a guide
through anger, fear, grief, and bewilderment, and is often based on
stories of people who have come on this journey. This Jewish rabbi
Niles Goldstein offers his readers ways to negotiate the problems
of life with confidence, even with style.

Goldstein offers stories of men and women with whom he has worked
as rabbi, chaplain, law-enforcement officer. He weaves his stories
with figures in the Old Testament, such as Cain, David and
Bathsheba, Samson, and prophets and mystics.. He hopes his words
will offer comfort and inspiration to secular and religious readers
alike.

The 8 chapters of this book are entitled disorientation, panic,
loneliness, yearning, anger, determination, surrender, and
emergence. "Ours is an age of agitation and isolation. Many of us
feel lost as we search for purpose, community, love, even self." We
are not the first generation to feel lost, and we certainly won't
be the last. Yet there is hope. We can learn from the past-and from
each other. Craving the Divine isn't a road map to salvation, but
rather, a guide to a deeper understanding of the challenges of
being human, a candle in a corridor of shadows."

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- Three perspectives . . .

A social worker, a minister, and a systems analyst set out one day
to play a friendly game of golf. At the course, they found a long
line waiting to get to the first tee. They asked the party in front
of them what the problem was, and were told that a group of blind
golfers was on the course ahead of them.

The following conversation ensued:

Social Worker: Isn't it wonderful what handicapped people can do if
you just give them half a chance?

Minister: It certainly is, but those golfers aren't on the course
alone. The Lord helps those who help themselves.

Systems Analyst: Yeah, it's neat all right, but why the hell can't
they play at night?
