WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: 1 Sm 1:24-28; 1 Samuel 2:1, 4-8; Lk 1:46-56
Sunday: Is 7:10-14; Ps 24:1-2, 3-4, 5-6; Rom 1:1-7; Mt
1:18-24

R. (7c and 10b) Let the Lord enter; he is king of glory.

The LORD's are the earth and its fullness;
the world and those who dwell in it.
For he founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.

Who can ascend the mountain of the LORD?
or who may stand in his holy place?
One whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean,
who desires not what is vain.

He shall receive a blessing from the LORD,
a reward from God his savior.
Such is the race that seeks for him,
that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- December 26th. St. Stephen.

The source for our knowledge of him is the Acts of the Apostles. A
Jew of Greek-speaking background, living in Jerusalem, he was
chosen by the apostles as one of the seven deacons, who distributed
alms and preached the word. The substantial speech which Stephen
makes in his defence suggests that he was learned in the
Scriptures; the speech serves as the vehicle for the argument that
the Temple in Jerusalem was a temporary institution, destined to be
superseded by Christ, the Messiah. He was stoned to death in about
35 by his opponents who accused him of blasphemy when he claimed to
see Christ seated at God's right hand. In order to stone him, they
took off their outer garments and laid them at the feet of one Saul
(later St. Paul), who approved of what he saw.

The feast of this first Christian martyr has been kept since at the
3rd century; his alleged tomb was discovered in 415. His cult (St.
Etienne) was particularly popular in France; the great cathedrals
of Sens and Bourges are dedicated to him, and many English churches
built in the aftermath of the Norman conquest share the same
dedication.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"The Nativity Story." DVD.

This week's recommendation is a movie. If you haven't yet seen
it, I recommend you do so. You'll probably want your own copy to
view again each year around Christmas time. It's a superb video
re-telling of the story of Mary and Joseph, and how the birth of
the Christ came to be. The musical score is also delightful.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

Every Christmas pageant throughout the world has a scene showing
Joseph leading Mary into Bethlehem on a donkey. Do you realize what
would happen if the Republicans asked for equal time?

-----

Do know what would have happened if it had been three wise WOMEN
instead of men, don't you? They would have asked for directions,
arrived on time, helped deliver the baby, cleaned the stable, made
a casserole, and brought disposable diapers as gifts!
