MESSAGE OF THE DAY

"For my part, the only perfection I know of is a hearty love of
God, and to love one's neighbour as oneself. Charity is the only
virtue which rightly unites us to God and other people. Such union
is our final aim and end, and all the rest is mere delusion."
- Jean Pierre Camus -

Praying the Daily Gospels
- by Philip St. Romain:

- Luke 21: 12-19 (Persevere through persecutions)

Because Christians recognize that the status quo is never a full
manifestation of the kingdom of God, we shall be persecuted by the
idolaters of the status quo. Perseverance in love and truth shall
win us a place in eternity, however, for our Lord has gone before us.

- Do you believe that heroism is dead? What are some "ordinary"
examples of heroism with which you are familiar? Why have these
people persevered in such noble ways?

- What are examples of heroic perseverance from your own life? How
did you grow because of these experiences?

MYSTICISM
- by Evelyn Underhill -

. . . each adventurer must discover and extirpate all those
interests which nourish selfhood, however innocent or even useful
these interests may seem in the eyes of the world. The only rule is
the ruthless abandonment of everything which is in the way. "When
anyone God perfectly desires to love, all things as well inward as
outward that to God's love are contrary and from His love do let,
he studies to do away." This may mean the prompt and utter
self-stripping of St. Francis of Assisi, who cast off his actual
clothing in his relentless determination to have nothing of his
own: the reluctant bit-by-bit renunciations which at last set his
follower Angela of Foligno free, or the drastic proceedings of
Antoinette Bourignan, who found that a penny was enough to keep her
from God.

MEDITATING ON SCRIPTURE (Method of St. Francis de Sales)

A. Settling in: call to mind God's presence; address oneself to God
in vocal prayer.

B. Reading the Scripture passage slowly, prayerfully.

C. Exercise of the will and intellect in considering the message:
what is this passage saying? what is it calling forth from me?

D. Conclusion: acts of thanksgiving, remorse and intercessions
awakened by the meditation.

E. Application: Immediate follow-through on resolutions made.
