R. (cf. 9) The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice.

Sing praise to the LORD with the harp,
with the harp and melodious song.
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
sing joyfully before the King, the LORD.

Let the sea and what fills it resound,
the world and those who dwell in it;
let the rivers clap their hands,
the mountains shout with them for joy.

Before the LORD, for he comes,
for he comes to rule the earth,
He will rule the world with justice
and the peoples with equity.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- November 23rd. St. Clement (Clement 1. Pope & Martyr).
He was the fourth Bishop of Rome, after Peter, Linus and Cletus. He
is known principally for his Letter to the Corinthians, written in
about 96. Apart from providing evidence for the work of Peter and
Paul in Rome, and their martyrdom there, it is the earliest example
of the involvement of the Bishop of Rome in the affairs of another
Church, the charitable concern of the Pope for the life of all the
churches. In fact this letter was included in the Mass readings in
the church in Corinth. and is included in one version of the New
Testament (the so-called Codex Alexandrinus), though it was never
to be universally accepted as 'inspired Scripture'. Tradition has
it that Clement was exiled to the Crimea, and forced to work in the
mines. This did not stop him making converts, and he was put to
death in about 100 AD by being hurled into the sea with an anchor
round his neck (the anchor is his symbol). This submarine death did
not prevent relics of the saint coming to Rome, to the famous
church of San Clemente near the Colosseum. In England. the most
famous church dedicated to him is the RAF Church of St. Clemment
Danes in the Strand; he is also patron of Trinity House, providers
of lightships and lighthouses.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"The Navarre Bible, The Psalms and the Song of Solomon," texts and
commentaries Jose Maria Casciaro, general editor Four Courts Press
of Dublin. 2003.

This is a 500 page commentary on the psalms and the Song of
Solomon. The authors present the psalms as a book of prayers and
praises, mostly addressed to God. Here are also proclamations of
the works of the Lord, descriptions of humankind's plight, curses
invoked on enemies, songs of praise of the local King or of the
City of Jerusalem, and various exhortations to a good life. The
authors note that even though the psalms date back to the time of
King David, they are also applicable to the human condition of
today's world.

The Song of Songs, a blending of love songs, celebrates the love
between God and the human individual, and between God and God's
people.

The introduction notes the role of poetry in the Old Testament and
the development of the Wisdom tradition as a preparation for the
New Testament. The psalms are explained in terms of the Hebrew and
Greek texts, the origin and authorship, the religious message of
the psalms verse by verse, and how the psalms are used in the life
of the Church.

There is also an explanation of the literary form of the Song of
Songs, of the structure and summary of the poem, the composition
and historical setting, the message and the Song in the light of
the New Testament, and verse by verse explanations of the text.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

One day our physics professor was discussing a particularly
complicated concept. A pre-med student rudely interrupted to ask
"Why do we have to learn this stuff?"

"To save lives." the professor responded quickly and continued the
lecture.

A few minutes later, the same student spoke up again. "So, how does
physics save lives?" he persisted.

"It keeps the dummies out of medical school," replied the professor.
