Saturday: Rom 4:13, 16-18; Ps 105:6-7, 8-9, 42-43; Lk 12:8-12
Sunday: Ex 17:8-13; Ps 121:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8; 2 Tm 3:14-4:2;
Lk 18:1-8

R. (cf. 2) Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

I lift up my eyes toward the mountains;
whence shall help come to me?
My help is from the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.

May he not suffer your foot to slip;
may he slumber not who guards you:
indeed he neither slumbers nor sleeps,
the guardian of Israel.

The LORD is your guardian; the LORD is your shade;
he is beside you at your right hand.
The sun shall not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

The LORD will guard you from all evil;
he will guard your life.
The LORD will guard your coming and your going,
both now and forever.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- October 24th. St. Anthony Claret.

He was a Catalan, i.e. a native of the region of Spain whose
capital is Barcelona, and was born in 1807. He worked as a weaver
until he was drawn to the religious life; he always wanted to be a
foreign missionary but for many years his health prevented it. He
was, however, responsible for the founding of an Order of
missionary clergy which still exists today, and who are commonly
known as the Claretian Fathers. He was then nominated as Archbishop
of Santiago in Cuba, which was still a Spanish possession, and
worked heroically for the interests of the most oppressed,
especially workers in the sugar plantations who were to all intents
and purposes slaves. He returned to Spain in 1857, and devoted
himself to writing, but also to encouraging scientific, musical and
linguistic studies. He was a Christian humanist in a country not
always noted for its enlightenment. He also served as personal
Chaplain to the Queen (Isabel II) and when she was driven out of
the country in the Spanish revolution of 1868 he accompanied her
into exile in France, dying just over the border at Narbonne, in
1870. He was canonised in 1950.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Preaching the Poetry of the Gospels, a lyric companion to the
lectionary," by Elizabeth Michael Boyle OP. Loyola Press, 2003.
- http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0814628915/christianspiritu/

In the five chapters of the book, Boyle offers her readers
reflections on the four main liturgical seasons of the Church year,
and a chapter on the use of poetry in Ordinary time.

Boyle notes that when Jesus spoke He appealed to his audience on
three different levels:

1. He enticed a response to language that was startling, rarely
academic, and never boring

2. He led them to read his significant actions as dramatic poetry

3. He desired his message to be communicated fully only in that
"primary zone," such as Mary did as she treasured in her heart what
she couldn't understand (Lk 2:51).

The author believes that reading poetry gives fresh insights and is
a better preparation for prayer. She provides several poems for
each suggested Gospel passage. She notes that for personal prayer
only one question is necessary:

"What do the words in the Gospel text do - or try to do - to my
relationship with God and with others?

"God's first language was a wordiess poetry. Reading and responding
to the Gospels with a poet's eyes and ears help us recover the
beauty and the power of God's first language."

JOKE OF THE WEEK

God's man . . .

Our parish priest was making a visit to my nephew's home. He
knocked on the door, and the little 4-year-old boy went to the door
and way the priest. He called to his dad, "Hey, Dad! That guy that
works for God is here!"

Brains vs. Brawn

The strong young man at the construction site was bragging that he
could outdo anyone in a feat of strength. He made a special case of
making fun of one of the older workmen. After several minutes, the
older worker had had enough.

"Why don't you put your money where your mouth is," he said. "I
will bet a week's wages that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow
over to that outbuilding that you won't be able to wheel back."

"You're on, old man," the young man bragged replied. "Let's see
what you got."

The old man reached out and grabbed the wheelbarrow by the handles.
Then, nodding to the young man, he said, "All right. Get in."
