MESSAGE OF THE DAY
What settings are you in when you fall? Avoid them. What props do
you have that support your sin? Eliminate them. What people are you
usually with? Avoid them. There are two equally damning lies Satan
wants us to believe: 1) Just once won't hurt. 2) Now that you have
ruined your life, you are beyond God's use, and might as well enjoy
sinning.

(As recovery groups put it, we must "change playgrounds and
playmates." What might this be for you at this time in your life?)

SCRIPTURE READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Rom 1:16-25; Ps 19:2-3, 4-5; Lk 11:37-41
R. (2a) The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
Day pours out the word to day,
and night to night imparts knowledge.
Not a word nor a discourse
whose voice is not heard;
Through all the earth their voice resounds,
and to the ends of the world, their message.

Praying the Daily Gospels

- Luke 11: 37-41 (Confrontation at a Pharisee's home)
Some of the Pharisees must have been friendly toward Jesus' cause.
Indeed, Paul often found them to be more sympathetic to the gospel
than were the scribes or the Sadducees. When Jesus chooses to
ignore certain rituals of cleanliness in a Pharisee's home, he is
being deliberately provocative. This incident gives him an
opportunity to confront the legalism of his host, calling the
Pharisee to re-examine his priorities.
- Many people believe that Jesus' criticism of the Pharisee in
today's reading can be applied to society today. What do you think?
- Why would alms giving help transform the heart of the Pharisees?
How does giving of your time and talent in the service of others
transform you?

SAYINGS OF LIGHT AND LOVE
by St. John of the Cross
- jottings from his notebooks
Prayer of a Soul Taken with Love
26. Lord God, my Beloved, if you still remember my sins in such a
way that you do not do what I beg of you, do your will concerning
them, my God, which is what I most desire, and exercise your
goodness and mercy, and you will be known through them. And if you
are waiting for my good works so as to hear my prayer through their
means, grant them to me, and work them for me, and the sufferings
you desire to accept, and let it be done. But if you are not
waiting for my works, what is it that makes you wait, my most
clement Lord? Why do you delay? For if, after all, I am to receive
the grace and mercy that I entreat of you in your Son, take my
mite, since you desire it, and grant me this blessing, since you
also desire that.
