R. (cf. 2b) The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.
Sing to the LORD a new song,
for he has done wondrous deeds;
his right hand has won victory for him,
his holy arm.
The LORD has made his salvation known:
in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice.
He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness
toward the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation by our God.
Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands:
break into song; sing praise.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- October 17th St. Ignatius of Antioch.
A Syrian, Ignatius became Bishop of Antioch ("where believers were
first called Christians") in 69, and is thus a living link with the
Church of the first disciples. Nothing is known of his life at this
stage, but seven famous letters of his have survived, written while
he was being taken to Rome, condemned to death by the Emperor
Trajan for being a Christian. Some of these were written in Smyrna
(now Izmir, Turkey) when he and his escort stopped there, and where
he was received by St. Polycarp, himself later a martyr, and a
disciple of St. John. The seven letters were to the Christians of
Ephesus, Magnesia, Tralles, Philadelphia and Smyrna (all in modern
Turkey), to the Christians in Rome, and to Polycarp himself. They
ardently affirm the Resurrection, the unity of the Church based on
the witness of Peter and Paul, and the dignity of Christian
ministry, especially that of the Bishop. They urged Christians not
to intercede for him to 'get him off the hook'; Ignatius was ready
to die a martyr's death, and described himself as the "wheat of
Christ, ground by the teeth of beasts to become pure bread". Indeed
he met his fate thus, thrown to the lions in the Roman Colosseum.
Ignatius' fame spread immediately, and his letters were translated
almost at once in Latin and into several Oriental languages.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Running with God: spiritual fitness for all seasons," by Ken
Rolheiser. Twenty-third publications, 2006.
In his nine chapters, all of which are concerned with running, Ken
Rohleiser gives his readers prescriptions for running the race to
heaven. These titles include ideas for running with hungry hearts,
with repentance, to see God, beside the cross, into God's arms, in
cool breezes, and toward holiness. He wants the readers to picture
God waiting for them with open arms. He invites readers to make the
way through the seasons of life, always with the goal of reaching
those outstretched arms of God. He wants his readers to recognize
the touch and presence of a loving Father, especially in ordinary
events of life.
The author is a splendid story teller and keeps, his readers
looking for spiritual gems in his humorous stories, events real and
imaginary. He includes the stories to help readers experience
deeper meaning in their lives and a closer relationship with God.
Each chapter ends with quotes from Scripture and reflection
questions for group or personal prayer time.
In his introduction Rolheiser says, "If you join me on this
journey, you may occasionally need to catch your breath, but the
secret is to keep running. Our challenge is to live life with
intensity. When we keep running the good race, the Spirit of God
bears us up on eagle's wings; the breath of God lifts us higher and
higher. With the Spirit working in us we can do awesome things."
Rohleiser challenges readers to run toward God with the enthusiasm
that befits the calling as Christians. "Above all, I want us to
have the joy of an enthusiastic day laborer in the vineyard of the
Lord."
Join the race; laugh, cry, pray, and run with Rohlieser!

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK
Spirituality and Practice
- http://www.spiritualityandpractice.com/
"Multifaith. Interfaith. Transreligious. Interspiritual. All these
terms describe a new reality in religious life: the intentional
interaction of people of different religious traditions. Some of
these meetings have arisen out of the crises of our time,
specifically 9/11, the war on terrorism, and ethnic and religious
conflicts around the world. Others are the byproduct of living in
an increasingly hyphenated culture, where more and more people
describe themselves as belonging to multiple social, cultural,
ethnic, or religious groups.
"Such interactions broaden our understanding of both spirituality
and practice. That's certainly what we've discovered in our book
reviewing over the past decade. So we've compiled a list of 100
recommended multifaith resources. "
I was especially impressed by the listing of practices, and the way
these are discussed, including specific suggestions. You might
also enjoy taking the self-test to see what practices might work
best for you (see link in top right).

JOKE OF THE WEEK
A cowboy was walking down the street with his new pet dachshund.
The passerby asked him why a cowboy would own that kind of dog.
The cowboy answered, "Well, somebody told me to get along little
doggie."
(Right . . . I know . . . so here's a bonus -- much better!)
A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes
to a family in Egypt, and is named "Amal." The other goes to a
family in Spain; they name him "Juan."
Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his mom. Upon
receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she
also had a picture of Amal. Her husband responds, "But they are
twins--if you've seen Juan, you've seen Amal."
