WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: Bar 4:5-12, 27-29; Ps 69:33-35, 36-37; Lk 10:17-24
Sunday: Hab 1:2-3; 2:2-4; Ps 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9; 2 Tm 1:6-8,
13-14; Lk 17:5-10

R. (8) If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

Come, let us sing joyfully to the LORD;
let us acclaim the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us joyfully sing psalms to him.

Come, let us bow down in worship;
let us kneel before the LORD who made us.
For he is our God,
and we are the people he shepherds, the flock he guides.

Oh, that today you would hear his voice:
"Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,
as in the day of Massah in the desert,
Where your fathers tempted me;
they tested me though they had seen my works."

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- October 9th. St. Denis & his Companions.

Denis was an Italian, sent with others to bring Christianity to the
French. He established a Christian centre on an island in the Seine
at Paris, and achieved considerable success. He was martyred in the
persecution of the Emperor Decius in 251, along with a priest,
Rusticus, and a deacon, Eleutherius. Their tombs were later to be
the focal points of the abbey of St. Denis in the north of Paris,
subsequently the burial-place of the French kings. The cult of St.
Denis received a great boost thanks to a misidentification, which
linked him with Dionysius (=Denis), one of the few Athenian
disciples of St. Paul [Acts 17], and further with the 5th century
theologian Dionysius, who wrote with much influence on the Names of
God, the Light of God, and the Unknowability of God (and who is now
known, in an attempt to remedy the confusion, as Pseudo-Dionysius).
For the purposes of this version, the evangelisation of France had
to be pushed back to the 1st. century AD and the time of the
apostles. The combination of three separate individuals proved a
popular mixture, and resulted in many church dedications to St.
Denis, including a substantial number in this country.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"What is the Point of Being a Christian?" by Timothy Radcliffe O.
Burns and Oates, 2005.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0860123693/ref=noism/christia
nspiritu/

A superb story teller and a wonderful preacher combine in Father
Radcliffe to make him the author of this truly prophetic book. The
book is based on his pastoral experience in dealing with
problematic marriages, with celibacy, with those trying to
understand the nature of religious authority, and those trying to
remain loyal to a Church which they often doubt. He gives
reasonable and comforting answers that are based on the mission of
Christ. "Our statements about God are only understandable in the
context of lives that are pointed to God."

Radcliffe makes his readers aware of the fact that religion must
not become just something useful in a consumer society, but must
always point to God, the giver of all good. He notes that for the
Christian, hope is an essential element, along with freedom,
happiness, and courage. "If our faith is true, then God is the
point of everything, one towards whom we are pointed as our destiny
and happiness."

A religion that tries to market itself for some "useful purpose"
such as it helps get rid of stress or makes you wealthy, "is
shooting itself in the foot", says the author. "The point of any
religion is to point us to God who is the point of everything. That
is why it makes no sense to ask whether belief in God is
'relevant', because God is the measure of all relevance." He notes
that Christianity must make a difference in one's life or it is not
Christianity.
