WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: Mi 5:1-4a; Ps 13:6ab, 6c; Mt 1:1-16
Sunday: Wis 9:13-18b; Ps 90:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14-17; Phmn
9-10, 12-17; Lk 14:25-33

R. (1) In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.

You turn man back to dust,
saying, "Return, O children of men."
For a thousand years in your sight
are as yesterday, now that it is past,
or as a watch of the night.

You make an end of them in their sleep;
the next morning they are like the changing grass,
Which at dawn springs up anew,
but by evening wilts and fades.

Teach us to number our days aright,
that we may gain wisdom of heart.
Return, O LORD! How long?
Have pity on your servants!

Fill us at daybreak with your kindness,
that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days.
And may the gracious care of the LORD our God be ours;
prosper the work of our hands for us!
Prosper the work of our hands!

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- September 11th. St. Deiniol.
Deiniol (a Celtic form of the name Daniel), born in the early 6th
century, was an important figure in the development of Christianity
in North Wales. The son of a Celtic chieftain, he founded two
monasteries, both named Bangor, one of which was close to the
modern town of that name. These were flourishing houses, allegedly
with a total of over 2000 monks; many were to perish near Chester
at the hands of a pagan king of Northumbria. Deiniol himself is
regarded as the first bishop of Bangor. There are numerous
dedications to him in North Wales (including the famous library
which the Prime Minister Gladstone established in his country seat
at Hawarden, near Chester), but few in the South. In 545 he and
St. Dyfrig, who worked in the border country, took part in a synod
with St. David which settled many matters regarding the discipline
of penance (something over which Celtic Christians enthused); this
suggests that Deiniol was regarded as David's equal. He died in
about 584.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

Something More...Excavating Your Authentic Self, by Sarah Ban
Breathnach. Warner, 1998.

Ever thought about becoming an archaeologist? Sarah invites the
readers to become an archeologist of your very self. She encourages
her readers to plumb the past with its unfulfilled longings,
forgotten pleasures, and abandoned dreams and to excavate the woman
buried inside.

Sarah wants the readers to take this journey and promises it will
be an exhilarating adventure. Throughout this book the author gives
countless examples of women who have taken this inward journey, and
how they have grown through the experience. She relates stories
about others who were not brave enough to undertake it, and she
shows how they have remained "stuck" and very unhappy.

Eagerly the author traces the road to authenticity, and makes
promises that those who follow will find their true self, and be
able to enjoy happiness without dependence on the others to whom
one may have possibly relied for happiness at an earlier stage. She
warns against the pitfall of blaming others for one's state of
happiness or lack therof.

This well-researched book invites the timid, the fearful, the sad,
the one who has made bad choices in the past, to take this journey
into one's inner self, and accept all the happiness to which every
one has a right.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- Who wants to go to heaven?

Father Murphy walks into a pub in Donegal, and says to the first
man he meets, "Do you want to go to heaven?"

The man said, "I do Father."

The priest said, "Then stand over there against the wall."

Then the priest asked the second man, "Do you want to got to heaven?"

"Certainly, Father," was the man's reply.

"Then stand over there against the wall," said the priest.

Then Father Murphy walked up to O'Toole and said, "Do you want to
go to heaven?"

O'Toole said, "No, I don't Father."

The priest said, "I don't believe this. You mean to tell me that
when you die you don't want to go to heaven?"

O'Toole said, "Oh, when I die, yes. I thought you were getting a
group together to go right now."
