(cf. 11b) God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor.
The just rejoice and exult before God;
they are glad and rejoice.
Sing to God, chant praise to his name;
whose name is the LORD.
The father of orphans and the defender of widows
is God in his holy dwelling.
God gives a home to the forsaken;
he leads forth prisoners to prosperity.
A bountiful rain you showered down, O God, upon your inheritance;
you restored the land when it languished;
your flock settled in it;
in your goodness, O God, you provided it for the needy.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- September 1st. St. Drythelm.
He was a monk of the abbey of Melrose in the Scottish border country, and died in about 700. When living as a layman in Ayrshire he underwent a 'near death' experience, from which he recovered, and which terrified those who had come to mourn him. The experience brought about a change of life; he divided his property between his wife, his sons, and the poor, and joined the Melrose community. He was also influenced by a vision which he saw on the life of the beyond, which he was to write down, amid which was to be the earliest of its kind in these islands. In its complex understanding of the divisions of hell, purgatory and paradise, it anticipated the much more famous "Divine Comedy" of Dante written some 600 years later. Drythelm's monastic life style was extremely austere; he would stand in the waters of the River Tweed even in the depths of winter reciting the psalms, for example. Although no cult of him ever really developed, the Venerable Bede gives a full account of his life in his "Ecclesiastical History" and the popularity of the History was in part due to the prominence given to this now obscure saint from the North.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
The Bodily Resurrection of Jesus, by James Arraj. Inner Growth Books and Tapes. 2007.
- http://www.innerexplorations.com/catchtheomor/resurrecion.htm
I believe this is now the standard work on this topic. Examining the scriptures and a wide range of resources, scholar James Arraj concludes that the traditional Christian belief in the bodily reusrrection of Jesus has not been discounted by modern science and biblical studies. Although the topics reviewed might seem "heady," this book is quite accessible to educated Christian readers. Its strongest point is the depth of research, especially the review of the literature from the past three decades, when this core Christian belief has come to be questioned by many. If you can't afford the paperback copy, you can read the book online. We've been discussing it for some time on the shalomplace.com discussion forum (reference below) if you'd like to see what people are saying about this work. Come and add your own thoughts to the discussion.

The Teaching Company Religious Courses
http://www.teach12.com/store/courses.asp?t=&sl=&s=909&sbj=Religion&fMode=s
- by Diana Murray
Perhaps you already know about the Teaching Company because of their aggressive advertising! The courses are now typically presented on both CD and DVD, and they often have dramatic sales. About 40 of their courses are religion-based, covering topics such as The Bible, The Saints (e.g. The Apostle Paul and St. Francis of Assisi), Comparative and World Religions, Jesus, Philosophy of Religions, and Science and Religion. I studied The Story of the Bible and Historical Jesus, and found both of them enjoyable and informative. The Teaching Company has many other great courses in all of the classical subjects.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Pastor painting church
It seems that there was a little old church out in the countryside: painted white and with a high steeple.
One Sunday, the pastor noticed that his church needed painting. He checked out the Sunday ads and found a paint sale. The next day, he went into town and bought a gallon of white paint. He went back out to the church and began the job.
He got done with the first side. It was looking great. But he noticed he had already used a half gallon. He didn't want to run back in town and being the creative person that he was, he found a gallon of thinner in the shed out back, and began to thin his paint.
It worked out great. He finished the remaining three sides with that last half gallon of paint.
That night, it rained: it rained hard. The next morning when he stepped outside of the parsonage to admire his work, he saw that the first side was looking great, but that the paint on the other three sides had washed away.
The pastor looked up in sky in anguish and cried out, "What shall I do?"
A voice came back from the heavens saying, "Repaint, and thin no more!"
