SCRIPTURE READINGS

Col 1:24-2:3; Ps 62:6-7, 9; Lk 6:6-11

R. (8) In God is my safety and my glory.

Only in God be at rest, my soul,
for from him comes my hope.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
my stronghold; I shall not be disturbed.

Trust in him at all times, O my people!
Pour out your hearts before him;
God is our refuge!

- Luke 6. 6-11 (Healing on the Sabbath)

At times Jesus is intentionally provocative, contrary to popular
notions that he was always diplomatic and mild. Today Luke
describes a significant encounter between Jesus and the Jewish
authorities. By healing the man with the withered hand, Jesus is
responding to something which is not an emergency. On the Sabbath,
according to Jewish law, intervention is permitted only in
emergencies. Jesus is proving a point.

- Why do you believe Jesus chose to provoke the authorities? What
did he hope to gain? What did he stand to lose?

- Have you ever found it necessary to be prophetically
provocative? Are there issues requiring such a stance from you? How
will you respond?

the first cause.

228. The Incarnation established a new human species, or rather
effected a renewal of the species: divinized humanity.

LECTIO DIVINA METHOD (Benedictine Approach)

1. Relax. Settle in. Be aware that God is here, now, loving you.
2. Read a short passage of Scripture as though God were speaking
directly to you in it.
3. Choose a phrase from the passage that strikes you and repeat it
slowly, prayerfully, non-analytically.
4. When your heart is full, express to God the needs and sentiments
awakened by your meditation. When you're done, read another passage
and repeat steps 3 and 4.
5. If, at any time, you feel moved to simply be present to God in
loving silence, put the Scripture aside and rest in God.
