Artist's temptation
The artist tried to concentrate
on his work, but the attraction he felt for his model finally became
irresistible. He threw down his palette, took her in his arms and
kissed her.
She pushed him away. "Maybe your other models let you kiss them," she
said.
"I've never tried to kiss a model before," he swore.
"Really?" she said, softening, "How many models have there been?"
"Four," he replied, "A jug, two apples, and a vase."

"Crossing the
Desert: Learning to let go, see clearly, and live simply,"
by Robert J. Wicks, Sorin Books, 2007.
Those who have felt trapped in one of life's many deserts, may find in
this book a true sense of self and be moved to let go of the obstacles
to true happiness and growth. Wicks invites the readers to travel with
the 4th century monks and nuns who knew desert life; he also urges
readers to consider the lives of contemporary Christians. The goal of
Wicks is to assist his readers to find meaning in a life of peace and
joy by way of purity of heart.
The author goes to great lengths to help his readers understand that
the desert is a necessity for deep growth. He explains the place of
angels in'desert living. In an effort to assist the reader to "let go,"
Wicks presents four questions for reflection:
1.) What am I filled with now? 2.) What prevents me from
letting go? 3.) How do I empty myself? 4.)What will satisfy
me yet leave me open to more?"
He explains in some detail the type of "food" that can be explored to
feed the soul, such as gratitude, simplicity, a listening spirit,
appreciation of one's vulnerability. Sacred Scripture, and unceasing
prayer.

August 27th. St. Monica.
The mother of St.
Augustine (of Hippo), the great Doctor of the Church who is celebrated
on August 28th. She was born in North Africa, at Tagaste, in 332. She
endured a difficult marriage to one Patricius, compounded by the
presence in the house of an even more difficult mother-in-law. Her
patient demeanour eventually won both of them over. Her husband was
baptised in 370 and died in 371. She had three children. Her
relationship to Augustine is recorded in her son's "Confessions" (Book
9): Monica had him enrolled as a catechumen when he was young, but his
lifestyle was so wayward that he could not proceed to baptism. Tempted
to evict him from the house, Monica realised that a better way lay in
prayer and fasting. Augustine eventually went to Rome (trying to shake
off his mother by giving a false departure time), but she followed him,
and from Rome to Milan, where she had the joy of seeing him undergoing
a full conversion of heart and being baptised by St. Ambrose in 387.
Monica herself played a part in the spiritual preparation and retreat
which preceded this baptism. Thereafter, mother and son prepared to
return to Africa and got as far as Ostia, the port of Rome, where while
waiting for a ship Monica was taken ill and died (387).

Sacred Space
http://www.sacredspace.ie/
This website provides short but lovely computer-guided daily
"retreats", with scripture chosen specifically for each day. On "Prayer
for the Day", we are guided through six stages: The Presence of God,
Freedom, and Consciousness (for preparing body and mind); and The Word,
Conversation, and Conclusion (for reflection). Each stage is a
meditation on God's presence in our lives. This site also has pages on
“Prayer for Peace” and “Praying with the
Pope”, which invites us to pray the Pope’s
intention for the month. I spend time here each afternoon to remind
myself to keep focused on love.
