Book Review of the Week

Creating Moments of Joy, by Jolene Bracker. Purdue University, 2016 (5th ed.).

The big surprise in this book comes from the title; for whom is one creating moments of joy? The reader would most probably not surmise that the ones who are to receive the joy are those suffering for Alzheimer’s or Dementia.

“You can make mistakes all day long and know that tomorrow you get to start fresh because the person doesn’t remember the mistakes you made yesterday. Where else do you get a chance for a ‘do over’ with your loved ones!”

Bracker calls her readers to remember that the person with Alzheimer’s will lose his short-term memory but will retain some of his long term-memory. The first part of the brain that is damaged affects the short-term memory. That is why they repeat their stories, can’t remember what they had for breakfast but will not remember their son being there for breakfast with her. They can chat about what they want to eat but cannot chat about what they just ate.

One can be sure that they will tell the same old story over and over again, even in the same chat. As the disease progresses, a person with Alzheimer’s gets younger and younger in his mind, that is why they don’t remember their spouses for they think that either their spouses are too old because they have gray hair. If they talk in the mirror, they are really talking to another person, because they don’t recognize themselves.

Do not correct the person. Agree even if the truth is far away. You are not telling lies, you are just agreeing with the afflicted person, perhaps bringing on a smile or a laugh. Telling jokes will often bring much merriment. You are not caregiver to make all things correct; you are present to bring on a smile or offer a joke of simply agree with the afflicted.

Saint of the Week

St. Marguerite Bourgeoys: (1620-1700): January 12.

Born the sixth of 12 children in Troyes, France, Marguerite at the age of 20 believed that she was called to religious life. Her applications to the Carmelites and Poor Clares were unsuccessful. A priest friend suggested that perhaps God had other plans for her.

In 1654, the governor of the French settlement in Canada visited his sister, an Augustinian canoness in Troyes. Marguerite belonged to a sodality connected to that convent. The governor invited her to come to Canada and start a school in Ville-Marie (eventually the city of Montreal). When she arrived, the colony numbered 200 people with a hospital and a Jesuit mission chapel.

Soon after starting a school, she realized her need for coworkers. Returning to Troyes, she recruited a friend, Catherine Crolo, and two other young women. In 1667, they added classes at their school for Indian children. A second trip to France three years later resulted in six more young women and a letter from King Louis XIV, authorizing the school. The Congregation of Notre Dame was established in 1676 but its members did not make formal religious profession until 1698 when their Rule and constitutions were approved.

Marguerite established a school for Indian girls in Montreal. At the age of 69, she walked from Montreal to Quebec in response to the bishop’s request to establish a community of her sisters in that city. By the time she died, she was referred to as the “Mother of the Colony.” Marguerite was canonized in 1982.
