Book Review of the Week

The Twelve Steps: A Spiritual Journey, by Friends in Recovery. RPI Publishing, 2012 edition.

I am a co-leader of a recovery small group through my church. We have been using this workbook for two and a half years, spending twelve months to go through it each time. An important aspect of this workbook is that it was written by several authors, so the words written in it is a result of a collaboration, instead of just one person's viewpoint. Also, the questions posed within are simple, yet very deep. The key in this, however, is truly pondering the questions. You may be tempted to just write in the first answer that comes to your head. But if you sit on the question, ponder it, look at the feelings it causes you to feel, and then answer the question, you will receive much more out of it. Each step is explained through metaphors and examples and supported with Biblical scriptures. Personally having gone through this workbook twice over the last two years, I have a new freedom in life. I have hope and confidence in my future. I have healed personal relationships and have a deeper personal relationship with God. I think the book is amazing! It is very deep work, that sometimes is uncomfortable, but the result is so very worth it.

Saint of the Week

St. Catherine of Alexandria: (287-305): November 25.

Tradition has it that she was a Christian of noble birth, living in the 4th century, who declared herself a Bride of Christ, refused to marry the Emperor and successfully argued her case against fifty wise men sent to convince her of the error of her ways. She was tortured on a wheel (hence the Catherine Wheel of firework displays) but the wheel broke apart and she was ultimately beheaded.

The cult of St. Catherine centres on the famous monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai which bears her name. Although scholars maintain that none of this story is true (and she was indeed removed from the revised Roman Calendar in 1969), she enjoyed immense popularity thanks to the influence of the Crusaders and the widely distributed medieval “Golden Legend” with its lives of saints. She was the patron of, among others, wheelwrights and philosophers; in England alone there are even now nearly 40 sets of medieval wall-paintings of her life.
