SAINT OF THE WEEK
- December 11th. St. Damasus.
A Spaniard born in Rome he succeeded Pope Liberius in 366. He
declared the definitive Canon of Scripture (i.e. those books which
are or not to be included in the Bible) and gave to St. Jerome the
task of producing that Latin translation of the Bible which we know
as the Vulgate and which was standard for centuries. He was
concerned to preserve the historical records of the Church and to
honour martyrs in their place of burial. To this end he composed
many verse inscriptions to be placed at the martyrs tombs and some
of the original plaques are still in place in Rome. He died in 384.

Global warming is a very controversial topic in this century and
these two authors dare to challenge the concept and call global
warming unstoppable.
The authors present a large collection of reasons to show that
global warming is not as bad as some people say. They claim that
natural variations, occurring every 1,500 years, rather than
human-emitted greenhouse gases, have much to do with controlling
the climate. They say that solar-induced 1,500 year cycles generate
warming and cooling of the earth's temperature without regard for
the atmospheric concentration of greenhouses gases.
Singer and Avery have traveled the earth, often in harsh
conditions, climbing high mountains and huge glaciers, sailing
frigid seas, digging into remote sites for pollen and human
artifacts, to help the readers understand the planet's climate
changes. They have met with hostility and unbelief, lack of
encouragement from the press and the public, in order to prove that
global warming is not a man made occurrence, but is part of the
1,500 year cycle that can be proved historically for the past
10,000 years, extending back through several ice ages and warm
interglacials for at least one million years.
The Preface notes that warming is natural. The authors present more
than onehundred peer-reviewed papers published in professional
journals to prove this.

- The urgent need . . .
A well-respected surgeon was relaxing on his sofa one evening just

news, the phone rang. The doctor calmly answered it and heard the
familiar voice of a colleague on the other end of the line.
