WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Gal 3:22-29; Ps 105:2-3, 4-5, 6-7; Lk 11:27-28
Sunday: Is 25:6-10a; Ps 23:1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6; Phil 4:12-14,
19-20; Mt 22:1-14
R. (6cd) I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my
life.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
In verdant pastures he gives me repose;
beside restful waters he leads me;
he refreshes my soul.
He guides me in right paths
for his name's sake.
Even though I walk in the dark valley
I fear no evil; for you are at my side
with your rod and your staff
that give me courage.
You spread the table before me
in the sight of my foes;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Only goodness and kindness follow me
all the days of my life;
and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD
for years to come.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- October 19th. St. Isaac Jogues & other martyrs of Canada
St. Isaac Jogues was one of a number of French Jesuit priests,
mostly formed in Rouen, who volunteered for the Canadian mission in
the first half of the 17th. century and preached the Gospel to the
Mohawk Huron and Iroquois Indians. The Hurons were enemies of the
Iroquois, and after his first mission among the Hurons, St. Isaac
was waylaid by an Iroquois band and badly tortured, being held in
slavery for some time. He returned in 1644, only to find that the
Iroquois attributed to his presence a crop failure and outbreak of
sickness. He was invited to a treacherous meal and hacked to death.
His close friend, St. John of Brebeuf, worked among the Hurons with
great success but in 1649 was trapped in an Iroquois raid and died
a victim to their cannibalism. These and other pioneer martyrs of
the Canadian mission were canonised in 1930.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Firm But Kind and Gentle: A Practical Handbook for Pastoral
Ministry," by Rev. Joseph M. Chanplin. St. Paul's. 2006.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0818912545/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
The author presents the teachings of the Church regarding the
sacraments, especially Baptism and Marriage, as Christ's teachings
but surprisingly flexible in applications to specific pastoral
situations. He shows that though the "rules" reflect firmness and
fidelity, they also mirror an adaptiability that befits the
tenderness of a gentle Christ.
Although the book is intended for pastors, deacons, and pastoral
ministers, it will provide guidance for thsoe seeking to have their
child baptized or their marriage solemnized in the Church. The
author aims to give the readers reassurance and challanges as they
seek to be firm but kind and gentle in applying the directives in
individual circumstances.
Throught any of the encounters with those seeking the sacraments,
Champlin stresses the importance of personal contacts, rather than
emails or telephone conversations. Copies of Agreements,
Invitations, and pastoral aids make this book a handy reference.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- A few pearls of wisdom
I don't mind going nowhere as long as it's an interesting path.
Anything free is worth what you pay for it.
It hurts to be on the cutting edge.
In just two days, tomorrow will be yesterday.
I always wanted to be a procrastinator, never got around to it.
I am a nutritional overachiever.
My inferiority complex is not as good as yours.
I am having an out of money experience.
I plan on living forever! So far, so good!
Practice safe eating -- always use condiments.
A day without sunshine is like night.
I have kleptomania, but when it gets bad, I take something for it.
If marriage were outlawed, only outlaws would have in-laws.
You're getting old when you get the same sensation from a rocking
chair that you once got from a roller coaster.
It's frustrating when you know all the answers, but nobody bothers
to ask you the questions.
The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at
the right time, but also, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the
tempting moment.
Brain cells come and brain cells go, but fat cells live forever.
Age doesn't always bring wisdom. Sometimes, age comes alone.
Life not only begins at forty, it begins to show.
You don't stop laughing because you grow old, you grow old because
you stopped laughing!!
