SAINT OF THE WEEK
- September 23: Blessed Padre Pio of Pietrelcina.
Born Pio Forgione in the humble village of Pietrelcina near
Benevento in 1887, he joined the Capuchin Order in 1903 and was
ordained in 1910. In 1916 he arrived at the Order's house at San
Giovanni Rotondo on the Gargano Peninsula north of Bari, where he
remained until his death in 1968. On September 20, 1918 he
received the stigmata of Christ, the open wounds which stayed with
him for half a century. At one time held in suspicion (and indeed
prohibited from saying Mass in public) this friar, with a
remarkable insight into human souls, became - very reluctantly - a
magnet for many distressed and confused people seeking
reconciliation with God. Film evidence of pilgrims, in an
engagingly Italian way, literally battling to get to his
confessional, suffices to suggest his exceptional capacity as a
vehicle to God. He was beatified on May 2, 1999.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Thomas Merton, in my Own Words," Liguori, Missouri 2007 with a
-preface by Jonathan Montaldo of the Merton Institute of
Louisville, KY
- -
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0764816713/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
"I never had the slightest desire to be anything but a monk, since
I came here. There are all kinds of ways to God and ours is only one
of many. But it seems to be the one for me, and it is the one I
have chosen and accepted as God's will."
This is a delightful little book which provides readers with a
taste of the texts in which he speaks so eloquently and
passionately on what being a monk meant to him. The writings of
Merton have wide readership because of his works on social issues,
his poetry, his artistry, his skill in photography, but here he is
mainly "the monk"'.
Merton offers meditations for contemplative living which are
applicable to people in all walks of life and in all faith
traditions. But in this book his writing is focused on the main
task of his life; namely, to realize that union with God by prayer
and monastic contemplative living is paramount.
On July 3, 1968, Merton writes of his excitement on the upcoming
trip to Asia; he anticipates his journey to Thailand, India, Burma,
Japan, and Singapore, and other faraway places. "Then home, if they
can get me home. ..Right now, I am itching with vaccinations and
expectations, being photographed, etc... I may ride an ox, or a
yak, or a elephamp(sic) .... I hope to make the best of it while it
lasts."
Little did Merton realize his life would so tragically end in Asia
in 1968.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Difficult questions:
After eating, do amphibians have to wait one hour before getting
out of the water?
How can there be self-help groups?
If white wine goes with fish, do white grapes go with sushi?
If someone has a mid-life crisis while playing hide and seek, does
he automatically lose because he can't find himself?
If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself,
is it considered a hostage situation?
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they
still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?
Is there another word for synonym?
Isn't it a bit unnerving that doctors call what they do "practice"?
When sign-makers go on strike, is anything written on their picket
signs?
When your pet bird sees you reading the newspaper, does he wonder
why you're just sitting there, staring at carpeting?
Where do forest rangers go to "get away from it all"?
Why isn't there a mouse-flavored cat food?
Why do they report power outages on TV?
Why are builders afraid to have a 13th floor but book publishers
aren't afraid to have a Chapter 11?
