WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: Jer 26:11-16, 24; Ps 69:15-16, 30-31, 33-34; Mt
14:1-12
Sunday: Is 55:1-3; Ps 145:8-9, 15-16, 17-18; Rom 8:35,
37-39; Mt 14:13-21

R. (cf. 16) The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.

The LORD is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and of great kindness.
The LORD is good to all
and compassionate toward all his works.

The eyes of all look hopefully to you,
and you give them their food in due season;
you open your hand
and satisfy the desire of every living thing.

The LORD is just in all his ways
and holy in all his works.
The LORD is near to all who call upon him,
to all who call upon him in truth.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- August 2nd: St. Thomas of Hales.

A Benedictine monk of Dover Priory, he was murdered in a French
raid on the town on this date in 1295. A local cult grew up round
his tomb, encouraged by the Archbishop of Canterbury. King Richard
II applied for his canonisation and a process was established in
1380. The communities of two priories in Canterbury were made
responsible for this, and little progress followed, probably
because of rivalry between Canterbury and Dover. The story of his
life, which accompanied the formalities, in fact tells little about
him and dwells in greater length on the treachery of some citizens
of Calais who, with inside knowledge, guided the French troops to
the monks' dormitory, where the chalices and other valuables were
kept opposite Thomas's bed. In short, not a story to encourage
the entente cordiale.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Stories for a Faithful Heart," compiled by Alice Gray. Multnomah
Publ., 2000.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ref=noism/160142003X/christianspiritu/

This book contains powerful stories that stand like lighted candles
on a dark night. The chapter headings give a glimpse of the
treasures contained in each section: Compassion, Love, Making a
Difference, Changed Lives, Forgiveness, Trust and Contentment,
Prayer, and Faith. This book lends itself to preaching and
presenting lectures on spiritual topics.

Each chapter begins with an inspirational quote. For example, in
the section on Compassion, Grey wrote:
I have wept in the night for the shortness of sight
That to somebody's need made me blind;
But I never have felt a tinge of regret
For being a little too kind.

Many of the stories end with a Scripture quote. For example, at
the end of a story called "Lavender Memories," Grey wrote: "Blessed
are the merciful, for they shall be shown mercy." (Mt. 5: 7).

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK

360 degrees of financial literacy.

This site provides many mechanisms for financial planning as part
of a national volunteer effort, by the nation's Certified Public
Accountants Association, to help Americans understand their
personal finances and develop money management skills. Small steps
now (e.g. skip buying that daily bottle of water) can lead to large
savings down the road. Teachings, tools and articles in "financial
literacy" are organized as functions of life stage (childhood to
career to retirement) and of topic (such as business ownership,
education, and estate planning). The website focuses on financial
education as a lifelong endeavor.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- You'd better believe it!

A Scottish atheist was spending a quiet day fishing in the lake
when suddenly his boat was attacked by the Loch Ness monster. In
one easy flip, the beast tossed him and his boat at least a hundred
feet into the air. It then opened its mouth waiting below to
swallow them both.

As the Scotsman sailed head over heels and started to fall towards
the open jaws of the ferocious beast, he cried out, "Oh, my God!
Help me!"

Suddenly, the scene froze in place and as the atheist hung in
midair, a booming voice came out of the clouds and said, "I thought
you didn't believe in Me!"

"God, come on, give me a break!" the man pleaded, "Just seconds ago
I didn't believe in the Loch Ness monster either!"
