R. (8) Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
I will hear what God proclaims;
the LORD -- for he proclaims peace.
Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him,
glory dwelling in our land.
Kindness and truth shall meet;
justice and peace shall kiss.
Truth shall spring out of the earth,
and justice shall look down from heaven.
The LORD himself will give his benefits;
our land shall yield its increase.
Justice shall walk before him,
and prepare the way of his steps.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- August 11th. St. Clare.
She was born in Assisi in 1194, but nothing is known of her life
until she was convened by the preaching of St. Francis, renounced
her possessions and took the habit of a nun, joining him outside
the town at the delapidated Portiuncula chapel. Formed in the
religious life, she was then offered by Francis a house next to the
church of San Damiano, below the town, where she became abbess of a
community in 1215; her mother and two sisters became members. Their
life was extremely poverty-stricken; a Papal privilege of 1228
allowed them to live entirely by asking for alms, without any kind
of endowments. The Poor Clares spread rapidly, especially to Spain,
though Clare never left her convent. Devoted to prayer and penance
(and suffering from frequent ill-health) she interceded for her
town in times of crisis. When the army of the Emperor Frederick II
threatened Assisi, she had herself carried to the wall of the
convent clutching the Blessed Sacrament, and the army apparently
fled. That is why in art she is always shown holding a pyx or
monstrance. She died in 1253 and was canonised in 1255. As with the
male branch, controversy over absolute poverty continued after the
death of the Founder. The Order was reformed by St. Colette in the
15th. century, retaining its contemplative vocation and an
csscntial poverty of spirit. St. Clare is enshrined in the church
of her dedication in Assisi (a church badly damaged in the recent
earthquakes).

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"The Way is Made for Walking: a pilgrim along the Camino de
Santiago," by Arthur Paul Boers (Eugene H. Peterson, Foreword).
IVP Books, 2007.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ref=noism/0830835075/christianspiritu/
Pilgrimages are spiritual adventures that not many people consider
today. But the author decided to make the 500 mile pilgrimage
called Camino de Santiago, ending in the famous cathedral in
Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
The author gives incidents along the old path which had been walked
by millions before him. He learned to pray in a new way, in spite
of sore feet that needed medical attention and rest from walking,
in spite of terrible weariness, in spite of loads too heavy to
carry. He learned to form community with the walkers, even those
who spoke a different language; he learned to pray with others. He
learned he had to listen to his tired feet and weary body and take
needed rest. The cathedral didn't have to be reached by a definite
date.
One of the very special things he was open to learning along the
way was the need to live simply, a lesson he inserted into his
lifestyle after he returned home. His first warning came from two
seasoned travelers who warned him, "Your baggage is too heavy. You
don't need all that stuff." But what could he do without? Insect
spray? Two sets of underwear? Laundry soap? A camera? Some books he
had been wanting to read? A Bible? An empty bag for souvenirs he
would purchase along the way? Extra shoes? A guide book? A novel?
(He eventually sliced out the pages after he had read them).
Following what the author named a deep call from God, he finally
reached his destination and realized how much he had learned along
the way. He knew that "the way is made for walking."

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK
Pure Soy Candles
- http://www.caterpillarscandles.com/
Soy candles are made from soy wax, which is hydrogenated soybean
oil. Caterpillars candles is just one of many sites dedicated to
the distribution of these candles, but as Caterpillars Candles
point out: Buyer beware! Sellers may claim that a candle is "soy"
even if it contains only 25%. Here are a few reasons you might
like to consider soy candles if you haven't already: 1) Soy wax is
a favorite of environmentally conscious people because it is not
made from petroleum, like paraffin candles. Burning of soy candles
does not increase the CO2 level in the atmosphere. 2) They can last
up to 50% longer than paraffin candles. 3) Soot should be avoided
because it is very unhealthy and can eventually coat furniture and
walls. Soy candles produce about 90% less soot that paraffin
candles. Admittedly, point #3 is my favorite; I've ruined several
ceilings in my home with paraffin soot!
Some fun soy facts: Soybeans have a rich history from their
creation in China 5,000 years ago. In our country, they started
from humble beginnings, serving as ballast for Chinese ships coming
to America. Making their U.S. agricultural debut in 1829 for soy
sauce, inventors like George Washington Carver and Henry Ford
embraced soybeans for plastics, printing inks and a range of
industrial uses.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- The Engineer and the Manager
A man is flying a hot air balloon and realizes he is lost. He
reduces height and spots a man down below. He lowers the balloon
further and shouts, "Excuse me. Can you help me? I promised my
friend I would meet him half an hour ago, but I don't know where I
am."
The man below says, "Yes, You are in a hot air balloon, hovering
approximately 30 feet above this field. You are between 40 and 42
degrees N. Latitude, and between 58 and 60 degrees W. longitude".
"You must be an engineer," says the balloonist.
"I am," replies the man. "How did you know?"
"Well," says the balloonist, "everything you have told me is
technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your
information, and the fact is I am still lost."
The man below says, "You must be a manager." "I am," replies the
balloonist, "but how did you know?"
"Well," says the man below, "you don't know where you are, or where
you are going, You have made a promise which you have no idea how
to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. The fact is you
are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now
it is somehow my fault."
