http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: Mi 2:1-5; Ps 10:1-2, 3-4, 7-8, 14; Mt 12:14-21
Sunday: Wis 12:13, 16-19; Ps 86:5-6, 9-10, 15-16; Rom
8:26-27; Mt 13:24-43

R. (5a) Lord, you are good and forgiving.

You, O LORD, are good and forgiving,
abounding in kindness to all who call upon you.
Hearken, O LORD, to my prayer
and attend to the sound of my pleading.

All the nations you have made shall come
and worship you, O LORD,
and glorify your name.
For you are great, and you do wondrous deeds;
you alone are God.

You, O LORD, are a God merciful and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in kindness and fidelity.
Turn toward me, and have pity on me;
give your strength to your servant.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- July 23rd. St. Apollonia.

She was a deaconess of the church in Alexandria in Egypt, martyred
in 249 in her old age. During a riot when much Christian property
was destroyed "they seized her, broke out all her teeth with blows
on her jaws, and piling up a bonfire before the city, threatened to
burn her alive if she refused to recite with them their blasphemous
sayings. But she asked for a brief delay and without flinching
leapt into the fire and was consumed". Later her 'life' became a
'legend'; she was transformed into a beautiful young girl, whose
teeth were extracted with pincers; in another version she was a
princess who, before dying, promised to help all with toothache.
She is usually shown in art holding a tooth with a pair of pincers,
or having her teeth removed by some infernal contraption. In the
USA there is even a dentists' professional magazine called "The
Apollonian", which does not inspire confidence in the
start-of-the-art nature of the profession.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Your Life is Worth Mine: How Polish Nuns Saved Hundreds of Jewish
Children in German-occupied Poland," by Ewa Kurek. Hoppocrene
Books of New York, 1997.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ref=noism/0781804094/christianspiritu/

The fate of Jewish children during World War II is explored in
depth by one of the "saved" Jewish children, Ewa Kurek. She helps
her readers understand the Nazis' efficient ways of meeting their
murderous aims, the painful predicaments of Jewish children, and
the willingness of some nuns to risk their lives to save the hunted
little ones. She gives her readers fresh insights in the
relationship between good and evil.

Polish nuns in over 200 religious institutions of schools,
orphanages and convents saved over 1,200 Jewish children from the
horrors of the Hitler regime. These nuns rescued the children even
as they risked the death penalty themselves.

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK

The World Community for Christian Meditation
- http://www.wccm.org/

The World Community for Christian Meditation is ecumenical and
serves a universal "catholic" unity in its dialogue about the daily
practice and power of meditation to change hearts and so transform
our world. The Community continues the work begun by the
Benedictine monk John Main, who taught Christian meditation as way
of restoring the contemplative dimension of faith. The community
sponsors the John Main Seminar and The Way of Peace Program,
meditation retreats, teacher training, online audio talks, and a
quarterly spiritual newsletter. Information on pilgrimages and
local meditation groups as well as an online bookstore offer a wide
range of possibilities to practice Christian meditation.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

Two men arrive at the Pearly Gates at about the same time, both
wanting to know if they will be admitted to heaven. St. Peter asks
the first man his name, where he is from, and what he did in life.

The man answers that he is John Smith and that he was a taxi driver
in New York City.

St. Peter looks through his book, then gives the man a luxurious
silken robe and a golden staff, and bids him welcome into heaven
for his eternal reward.

St. Peter then asks the second man the same questions. He replies
that his name is Thomas O'Malley, and that he was a Catholic priest
in Chicago. St. Peter looks in his book, then gives him a cotton
robe and a wooden staff, and bids him to enter into heaven for his
eternal reward.

Father O'Malley says, Wait a minute! Why did that taxi driver get a
silken robe and golden staff while I, a Catholic Priest and a man
of God, got a cotton robe and wooden staff?

St. Peter told him that the rewards in heaven are based on results,
and while Father O'Malley preached, people slept, but while John
Smith drove, people prayed!
