Carmelite Spirituality in the Teresian Tradition, by Paul-Marie of the Cross,
OCD. ICS Publications, 1997.
Carmelites are long known for their priceless heritage of spirituality.
Elijah is one of their favorite prophets, along with Teresa of Avila and other saints. Teresa was the saint who brought vitality to a religious family gone stale in devout prayer. The discalced Carmelites came to the rescue and brought new fruit to the vine of religious life.
The author of this book identifies the principal texts, themes, figures, and teachings of Carmel, especially teachings of Elijah and Mary, the Rule of St. Albert and the Book of the Institute, the ways Carmelites understood contemplation and the degrees of prayer, plus the messages of Saint Teresa, St. John of the Cross, and Therese of Lisieux. This book has been long out of print and is reprinted for a younger generation of those seeking to know more about this form of prayer.
This little book deals with the sources of prayer, characteristics of Carmel, the rule and the Spirit, Masters and Models, Carmelite prayer and contemplation, plus characteristics of Carmelite spirituality. Plus four pages of explanatory notes, there is a select bibliography of related works in English.
Tradition may indeed explain and give a love for divine realities tasted in prayer. But it cannot confer that supreme and incommunicable knowledge that is a fruit of divine wisdom. This comes only to
those who open themselves to God in their souls and in their lives. Thanks to Sr. Irene Hartman, OP for this review.

Blessed Claudio Granzotto: (1900-47): September 6.
Born in Santa Lucia del Piave near Venice, Claudio was the youngest of nine children and was accustomed to hard work in the fields. At the age of nine he lost his father. Six years later he was drafted into the Italian army, where he served more than three years.
His artistic abilities, especially in sculpture, led to studies at Venice’s Academy of Fine Arts, which awarded him a diploma with the highest marks in 1929. Even then he was especially interested in religious art. When Claudio entered the Friars Minor four years later, his parish priest wrote, "The Order is receiving not only an artist but a
saint." Prayer, charity to the poor and artistic work characterized his life, which was cut short by a brain tumor. He died on the feast of the Assumption and was beatified in 1994.
