Message of the Day
“Out of this (contemplative prayer) grows the love of our neighbours, for we now esteem them, and no longer judge them as we used to do, when we looked upon ourselves as exceedingly fervent, and upon others as not. Now we see nothing but our own need for God, which we keep so constantly before our eyes that we can look upon nothing else.”
- St. John of the Cross, The Dark Night of the Soul

(God’s love transforms us. How have you noticed this happening to you lately?)

Lectionary Readings

1 Cor 2:10b-16;    Ps 145:8-9, 10-11, 12-13ab, 13cd-14

Lk 4:31-37

Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee.
He taught them on the sabbath,
and they were astonished at his teaching
because he spoke with authority.
In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon,
and he cried out in a loud voice,
“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are–the Holy One of God!”
Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet! Come out of him!”
Then the demon threw the man down in front of them
and came out of him without doing him any harm.
They were all amazed and said to one another,
“What is there about his word?
For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits,
and they come out.”
And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.

Reflection on the Scriptures

If demons, the fallen angels, believe in the power and authority of the Son of God, how much more should we believe in the power and authority of the gospel - the good news of Jesus Christ - with the full assent of our minds and hearts and entrust our lives to the Lord Jesus Christ? If we approach God’s word submissively, with an eagerness to do everything the Lord desires, we are in a much better position to learn what God wants to teach us through his word. Are you eager to be taught by the Lord and to conform your life according to his word?

“Lord Jesus, your word is power and life. May I never doubt your saving love and mercy, and the power of your word to bring healing, restoration, and freedom from sin and oppression.”

Precautions, by St. John of the Cross

Instruction and precautions necessary for anyone desiring to be a true religious and reach perfection.

*Against Oneself and the Shrewdness of Sensuality*

14. The other three precautions to be practiced in the wish to conquer one’s own self and sensuality, the third enemy.

*The second precaution*

16. The second precaution is that you should never give up your works because of a want of satisfaction and delight in them, if they are fitting for the service of God. Neither should you carry out these works merely because of the satisfaction or delight they accord you, but you should do them just as you would the disagreeable ones. Otherwise it will be impossible for you to gain constancy and conquer your weakness.
