Message of the Day

“When I had drunk the spirit from Heaven, and the second birth had restored me so as to make me a new person, then immediately in a marvelous manner doubts began to be resolved, closed doors to be opened, dark places to be light; what before was difficult now seemed easy.”

- St. Cyprian -

Lectionary Readings

Am 3:1-8; 4:11-12;    Ps 5:4b-6a, 6b-7, 8;    Mt 8:23-27

R. (9a) Lead me in your justice, Lord.

At dawn I bring my plea expectantly before you.
For you, O God, delight not in wickedness;
no evil man remains with you;
the arrogant may not stand in your sight.

You hate all evildoers;
you destroy all who speak falsehood;
The bloodthirsty and the deceitful
the LORD abhors.

But I, because of your abundant mercy,
will enter your house;
I will worship at your holy temple
in fear of you, O LORD.

Reflection on the Scriptures

The Lord is ever present to us. And in our time of testing he asks the same question: Why are you afraid? Have you no faith? Do you recognize the Lord’s presence with you, especially when you meet the storms of adversity, sorrow, or temptation? Whenever we encounter trouble, the Lord is there with the same reassuring message: “It is I, do not be afraid”.

“Lord Jesus, may I always recognize your abiding presence with me. And in times of trouble or fear may I find courage and strength to respond as you would. Help me to rely upon you in all circumstances and to trust in your help both in adversity and in temptation”.

Precautions, by St. John of the Cross

Instruction and precautions necessary for anyone desiring to be a true religious and reach perfection.

Against the World

4. To free yourself from the harm the world can do you, you should practice three precautions.

*The first precaution*

6. Regard all as strangers, and you will fulfill your duty toward them better than by giving them the affection you owe God. Do not love one person more than another, for you will err; the person who loves God more is the one more worthy of love, and you do not know who this is. But forgetting everyone alike, as is necessary for holy recollection, you will free yourself from this error of loving one person more or less than another.
