Book of the Week

Praying with Thomas Aquinas: Companions for the Journey, by Mary Mercy Houle, Michael Monshau and Patrick Norris.  St. Mary Press, 2000.

Jesus from the Cross spoke to Thomas, “You have written well of Me, Thomas. What reward do you want for your efforts?” The reply of the holy man was, “Nothing but Yourself, O Lord.”

St. Thomas is considered one of the most influential theologians in the history of the church, but he should also be seen as a wonderful spiritual guide. In this book, he can be considered as a “companion of the journey.”  He is a saint, a mystic, one who wanted only God as his reward.  St. Thomas “should be considered as a saint, not only because of his brilliant theology, but also for his hymns, poetry,  and his life expressing and flowing from an abiding and holy relationship with God.”

The Introduction contains a biographical story of the life of Thomas Aquinas from his birth in about 1224, his Dominican journey, his problems in convincing his family of his religious vocation, a student, a writer, a preacher, a life of prayer, his death, at the age of about fifty on March 7th in 1274. His death was the result of an accident when he hit his head on a low-lying branch of a tree when he was on his way to the Council of Lyons.

The Introduction is followed by fifteen meditations on various aspects and virtues of the saint. Each chapter contains a quote for Scripture, a reflection , and a  guided prayer. This book is part of the series called “Companions for the Journey.”

This book is intended to make the readers feel“at home with Thomas” as readers share his deep love of God  and his intense desire to know God always better and better.

Saint of the Week

St. Sharbel Makhluf (1828-98): July 24

Although this saint never traveled far from the Lebanese village of Beka-Kafra, where he was born, his influence has spread widely.

Joseph Zaroun Makluf was raised by an uncle because his father, a mule driver, died when Joseph was only three. At the age of 23, Joseph joined the Monastery of St. Maron at Annaya, Lebanon, and took the name Sharbel in honor of a second-century martyr. He professed his final vows in 1853 and was ordained six years later.

Following the example of the fifth-century St. Maron, Sharbel lived as a hermit from 1875 until his death. His reputation for holiness prompted people to seek him to receive a blessing and to be remembered in his prayers. He followed a strict fast and was very devoted to the Blessed Sacrament. When his superiors occasionally asked him to administer the sacraments to nearby villages, Sharbel did so gladly.

He died in the late afternoon on Christmas Eve. Christians and non-Christians soon made his tomb a place of pilgrimage and of cures. Pope Paul VI beatified him in 1965 and canonized him 12 years later.
