Message of the Day

We see in the risen Christ the end for which the human race was made, and the assurance that the end is within reach.
- Brooke Foss Westcott (1825-1901), The Revelation of the Risen Lord

(Let the hope of resurrection bolster your spirit this day.)

Daily Readings

ACTS 16:22-34;    PS 138:1-3, 7C-8;    JN 16:5-11

R. Your right hand saves me, O Lord.

I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with all my heart,
for you have heard the words of my mouth;
in the presence of the angels I will sing your praise;
I will worship at your holy temple,
and give thanks to your name.

Because of your kindness and your truth,
you have made great above all things
your name and your promise.
When I called, you answered me;
you built up strength within me.

Your right hand saves me.
The LORD will complete what he has done for me;
your kindness, O LORD, endures forever;
forsake not the work of your hands.

 Reflection on the Scriptures
Easter season has always been a dichotomy for me. The journey through Lent culminating in the Triduum seems to be the crescendo of the liturgical year. The next great feast of the Church arrives with Pentecost Sunday later this month. I have in the past lost some steam during the weeks separating the two Sundays. As I’ve matured in my spiritual journey, particularly in the last ten years, I’m becoming more reflective on the daily readings during this time. In the first reading Pentecost has already occurred, Paul has had his personal encounter with Christ and the apostles and other disciples have been filled with the Holy Spirit and converted thousands. They are vigorously proclaiming the “Good News” of salvation. Both in the reading from Acts and the Gospel of John, the Advocate is truly present and acting in the disciples. That same Advocate is still alive and acting within and among us all. Even in the psalm we are assured that God “will send to you the Spirit of truth.”

SPIRITUAL READING

Spiritual Direction and Psychotherapy (Part 2)

Because spiritual direction and psychotherapy have different goals and emphases, it is possible to benefit from both at the same time.  A person who is in counseling should not refrain from spiritual direction because of it.  Nor should anyone choose a spiritual director over a counselor.  In fact, spiritual directors who guide people away from psychotherapy are doing their directees a disservice.

It sometimes happens that a spiritual director is also a trained counselor.  Even so, the director and directee need to be clear about precisely what is going on in their work together.
