ANNUAL APPEAL FOR SUPPORT
- The regular newsletter content can be found below. -

It feels like it wasn’t so long ago that we were in mid-November 2013 and I was composing my annual appeal messages to invite your support of Daily Spiritual Seed and the Internet Ministry of Heartland Center for Spirituality. This is at least the 18th year I do so, as that’s how many autumns I’ve worked at the retreat center here in Great Bend. Talk about time flying!

Throughout the week, I will be updating you on what’s been happening in our Internet ministry, and sharing plans for the future. This year I am also asking you for suggestions on how to improve Daily Seed and for Internet programs that would be of interest to you. See the links below for more information, and thank you for considering these appeals.

Peace, Phil

Message of the Day
If our minds are stayed upon God, His peace will rule the affairs entertained by our minds. If, on the other hand, we allow our minds to dwell on the cares of this world, God's peace will be far from our thoughts.

Readings of the Day

TI 1:1-9;    PS 24:1-6;    LK 17:1-6

R. Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.

The LORD’s are the earth and its fullness;
the world and those who dwell in it.
For he founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.

Who can ascend the mountain of the LORD?
or who may stand in his holy place?
He whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean,
who desires not what is vain.

He shall receive a blessing from the LORD,
a reward from God his savior.
Such is the race that seeks for him,
that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.

Reflection on the Gospel
"My purpose in leaving you in Crete was that you might accomplish what had been left undone..." –Titus 1:5

Paul left Titus behind in Crete to minister to the Cretans. However, "Cretans have ever been liars, beasts, and lazy gluttons" (Ti 1:12). Paul probably didn't get too many resumes from candidates looking to get the job in Crete. Titus accepted the grace and faithfully established the foundations of the Church in Crete.

After Jesus set a Gerasene man free from a legion of demons, He did not allow the man to accompany Him (Mk 5:18ff). Instead, Jesus sent him back to witness to his family. "At that the man went off and began to proclaim throughout the Ten Cities" – above and beyond what Jesus asked of him – "what Jesus had done for him. They were all amazed at what they heard" (Mk 5:20).

Jesus refused Peter's request to remain atop the Mount of Transfiguration amidst the scene of His glory (Mt 17:4ff). Instead, Peter had to keep quiet about this wonderful experience (Mk 9:9) and return to failure and rebuke down in the valley (Mk 9:18-19). By the Holy Spirit, Peter persevered and soon led three thousand people to Jesus in one day (Acts 2:41).

Jesus may plant us in a sprawling weed patch (Mt 13:30). He often calls us to stay put (1 Tm 1:3) and "walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Cor 5:7). "Do whatever [Jesus] tells you" (Jn 2:5). Remember that, in Jesus, "you are the light of the world" (Mt 5:14). Because of you, may the weeds one day testify: "A people living in darkness has seen a great light. On those who inhabit a land overshadowed by death, light has arisen" (Mt 4:16).

PRAYER: "To do Your will, O my God, is my delight" (Ps 40:9).

PROMISE: "If he sins against you seven times a day, and seven times a day turns back to you saying: 'I am sorry,' forgive him." –Lk 17:4

Spiritual Reading
A Christian Understanding of the Soul, by Philip St. Romain
- from Caring for the Self, Caring for the Soul

3. More spiritual characteristics of the human soul.

c. Immateriality. The soul is a spiritual substance, and as such, it is immortal.  Nevertheless, it is a spirit that is meant to give life to a physical body and to exercise itself in a body.
d.  Freedom.  The soul may choose to do this or that. These choices are limited by the information available.
e. Intelligence.  Like angels, the soul is capable of grasping spiritual truth directly through intuition.  It may also gain knowledge through the exercise of reason from information obtained from the senses.
f. Personal.  Each soul is individual, belonging to the individual, whose intellectual and volitional experiences are possessed by that individual. This characteristic is responsible for the experience of self-consciousness.
g. Creatureliness.  The soul is a creation of God.  It is not eternal; it is created directly by God at conception.  Therefore, the soul is not a divine substance, although it is dependent on God for its existence and is therefore connected with God because of the fact of its existence.
