Book of the Week

Remade for Happiness: Achieving Life's Purpose, by Fulton J. Sheen. Ignatius, 2014.

Remember the TV show led by Bishop Futon Sheen some years ago? He would write on a chalkboard and when finished, an angel would clean the board? This book has many of the talks he gave on television.  Enjoy!  The Catholic Church is now looking forward to having him canonized! He is already named Venerable.

This book deals with these topics about the human experience: who God is, who we are, how we find fulfillment. His message was important to the people of his time, and is just as important today in 2014.

His first chapter is “Are you happy?” He gives several examples when the reader might have thought he/she was happy, only to find that that happiness was short-lived. Was it Christmas morning when the toys had already become dull, when you started on a much- planned trip, when you attained a great amount of wealth, when you landed a perfect job and soon found that these sources of happiness soon faded?

Sheen clearly explains the difference pleasure and true happiness.  He says that life can be filled with disappointments because perfect happiness is not here. “Begin with your own emptiness and seek Him who can fill it. But you must be aware of your own loneliness and want and disappointment before you can even want God to fill it.”

Other chapters are: what is God like, what are you like, how you got that way, who can remake you, is religion purely individual, how are you remade, judgment, purgatory, the hell there is, heaven, faith, hope, and charity.  Bishop Sheen calls the readers to explore all these topics and then shows “the necessary role that the Church, the sacraments, and the theological virtues play in helping us attain our ultimate desire---everlasting happiness.”

Saint of the Week

St. Didacus: (1400-1463) November 7

Didacus is living proof that God "chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong" (1 Corinthians 1:27).

As a young man in Spain, Didacus joined the Secular Franciscan Order and lived for some time as a hermit. After Didacus became a Franciscan brother, he developed a reputation for great insight into God’s ways. His penances were heroic. He was so generous with the poor that the friars sometimes grew uneasy about his charity.

Didacus volunteered for the missions in the Canary Islands and labored there energetically and profitably. He was also the superior of a friary there.

In 1450 he was sent to Rome to attend the canonization of St. Bernardine of Siena. When many friars gathered for that celebration fell sick, Didacus stayed in Rome for three months to nurse them. After he returned to Spain, he pursued a life of contemplation full-time. He showed the friars the wisdom of God’s ways.

As he was dying, Didacus looked at a crucifix and said: "O faithful wood, O precious nails! You have borne an exceedingly sweet burden, for you have been judged worthy to bear the Lord and King of heaven" (Marion A. Habig, O.F.M., The Franciscan Book of Saints, p. 834).

San Diego, California, is named for this Franciscan, who was canonized in 1588.
