Book of the Week

The Purpose Driven Life: What On Earth Am I Here For?, by Rick Warren. Zondervan, 2002. (Plus a journal to accompany this book.)

Warren begins this book by telling the reader that no one is an accident.  God made everyone for a very specific purpose. He says these purposes are multiple and will extend to all eternity. Warren wants each person to know God’s plan both for this life and for eternity.

The author says that some folks in reading self-help books try to discover God’s purpose by looking within themselves; he says this is the wrong place to begin. One must begin with God, the Creator, and search for God’s reasons for creating individuals. “You were made by God and for God and until you understand that, life will never make sense.”

His highest hope for readers is that each one will come to understand God’s amazing plan for here and for the hereafter. Warren believes that if one knows and follows God’s plan for his/her life, that one will have stress reduced, will focus on ones’ energy, simplify one’s decisions, develop meaning for life, and prepare for eternity.

Warren uses an abundance of quotes from Scripture as he challenges the usual definitions of worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and evangelism. In this book of hope, each  reader is offered a “distilled wisdom” on the essence of what life is all about.

It is in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ,…he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.  Eph 1:11

In the preface of the journal, Warren  writes:
Your life is a journey and a journey deserves a journal. You owe it to future generations to pre serve the testimony of how God helped you to fulfill his purposes on earth. It is a witness that will continue long after you are in heaven.

Saint of the Week

St. Hilarion: (291-371) October 21

Despite his best efforts to live in prayer and solitude, today’s saint found it difficult to achieve his deepest desire. People were naturally drawn to Hilarion as a source of spiritual wisdom and peace. He had reached such fame by the time of his death that his body had to be secretly removed so that a shrine would not be built in his honor. Instead, he was buried in his home village.

St. Hilarion the Great, as he is sometimes called, was born in Palestine. After his conversion to Christianity he spent some time with St. Anthony of Egypt, another holy man drawn to solitude. Hilarion lived a life of hardship and simplicity in the desert, where he also experienced spiritual dryness that included temptations to despair. At the same time, miracles were attributed to him.

As his fame grew, a small group of disciples wanted to follow Hilarion. He began a series of journeys to find a place where he could live away from the world. He finally settled on Cyprus, where he died in 371 at about age 80.

Hilarion is celebrated as the founder of monasticism in Palestine. Much of his fame flows from the biography of him written by St. Jerome.
