MESSAGE OF THE DAY

- Good Friday -

We see that brow bruised; we hear that dying groan; and while the
priests scoff and the devils rave, and the lightnings of God's
wrath are twisted into a wreath for that bloody mount, you and I
will join the cry, the supplication, of the penitent malefactor,
"Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom."

LECTIONARY READINGS FOR THE DAY
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Is 52:13--53:12; Ps 31:2, 6, 12-13, 15-16, 17, 25; Heb
4:14-16; 5:7-9; Jn 18:1--19:42

R. (Lk 23:46) Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.

In you, O LORD, I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame.
In your justice rescue me.
Into your hands I commend my spirit;
you will redeem me, O LORD, O faithful God.

For all my foes I am an object of reproach,
a laughingstock to my neighbors, and a dread to my friends;
they who see me abroad flee from me.
I am forgotten like the unremembered dead;
I am like a dish that is broken.

But my trust is in you, O LORD;
I say, "You are my God.
In your hands is my destiny; rescue me
from the clutches of my enemies and my persecutors."

Let your face shine upon your servant;
save me in your kindness.
Take courage and be stouthearted,
all you who hope in the LORD.

MEDITATION ON THE SCRIPTURES
- from
http://onlineministries.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/daily.html

Allow your heart to be touched and your world to be shook by this
breathless and unbelievable account of the demonstration of God's
love for us revealed in the self-giving love of Jesus. For, in
earlier words of John, "Greater love than this no one has than to
lay down His life for His friends." Be with Him in His suffering
as a dearly beloved friend. Nothing more important than that
should absorb our attention today. "Were you there when they
crucified my Lord?"

SPIRITUAL READING
- Fenelon's "Maxims of the Saints"

The holy soul may be said to be united with God (1.)
intellectually--that is to say, not by any idea which is based upon
the senses, and which of course could give only a material image of
God, but by an idea which is internal and spiritual in its origin,
and makes God known to us as a Being without form.

Second.-The soul is thus united to God, if we may so express it,
affectionately. That is to say, when its affections are given to
God, not indirectly through a self-interested motive, but simply
because He is what He is. The soul is united to God in love
without anything intervening, when it loves Him for His own sake.

Third.-The soul is thus united to God practically, and this is the
case when it does the will of God, not by simply following a
prescribed form, but from the constantly operative impulse of holy
love.
