SPIRITUAL GROWTH RESOURCES FOR THE EASTER SEASON

"Jesus is Risen!"
- https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/33561 (various ebook
formats)
Free download.

In this booklet, it is emphasized that the foundational conviction
for a Christian's attitude is belief in the resurrection of Jesus.
We examine the evidence for the resurrection and show how we can
encounter the risen Christ today--how we can make sense of pain and
problems, and learn to live the risen life.

(paperback)

formats)

This work bundles together three related works previously published
for different purposes.
Part One - "The Meaning of the Resurrection," examines the evidence
of the Resurrection and then treats its implications for the life
of the believer.
Part Two - "Encountering the Risen Christ," reflects on meeting
the risen Christ in his four modes of present to us:
personal/historical, communal, sacramental and cosmic. Part Three -
"The Gift of the Spirit," notes the decisive role of the Holy
Spirit in the lives of early Christian believers, and in our own as
well. The theme running through these three parts is that Jesus of
Nazareth is risen, and that we can come to know him and give
evidence of his life and love in our own as well.

WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: Acts 6:1-7; Ps 33:1-2, 4-5, 18-19; Jn 6:16-21
Sunday: Acts 2:14, 22-33; Ps. 16:1-2, 5, 7-11; 1 Pt 1:17-21;
Lk 24:13-35

R. Lord, you will show us the path of life.

Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;
I say to the LORD, "My Lord are you."
O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup,
you it is who hold fast my lot.

I bless the LORD who counsels me;
even in the night my heart exhorts me.
I set the LORD ever before me;
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.

Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices,
my body, too, abides in confidence;
because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld,
nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption.

You will show me the path to life,
abounding joy in your presence,
the delights at your right hand forever.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Judgment

Condemnation. There are several judgments: the judgment of the
believer's sins (John 5:24), the judgment of the believer's self (1
Cor. 11:31-32), the judgment of the believer's works (2 Cor. 5:10),
the judgment of the nations (Matt. 25:31-46), and the judgment of
the wicked (Rev. 20:11-15).

There is no judgment for the Christian in respect to salvation
(Rom. 8:1). We were judged in Christ on the cross 2000 years ago.
However, as Christians we will be judged according to our works (2
Cor. 5:10) with, most probably, varying degrees of rewards. But,
remember, the judgment of our works does not affect our salvation.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- St. Catharine of Bologna (1413-1463): May 9

Some Franciscan saints led fairly public lives; Catharine
represents the saints who served the Lord in obscurity.

Catharine, born in Bologna, was related to the nobility in Ferrara
and was educated at court there. She received a liberal education
at the court and developed some interest and talent in painting. In
later years as a Poor Clare, Catharine sometimes did manuscript
illumination and also painted miniatures.

At the age of 17, she joined a group of religious women in Ferrara.
Four years later the whole group joined the Poor Clares in that
city. Jobs as convent baker and portress preceded her selection as
novice mistress.

In 1456, she and 15 other sisters were sent to establish a Poor
Clare monastery in Florence. As abbess Catharine worked to preserve
the peace of the new community. Her reputation for holiness drew
many young women to the Poor Clare life. She was canonized in 1712.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Contemplative Ethics," by Dennis J. Billy, CSsR. Paulist Press,
2011.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0809146800/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

The author's aim in this book is to study the relationship between
spirituality and moral theology. Thus he wants to enrich both
disciplines by sharing how they relate to one another on an equal
footing and in a genuine spirit of cooperation. He writes how the
immersion of one's self in the mystery of Christ affects the way
one thinks about the nature and scope of one's action in the world.
He believes that the task of Catholic moral theology today is to
foster an ongoing integration of spirituality, morality,
contemplation and action, goodness and holiness, in the lives of
people it seeks to serve.

"Contemplative ethics requires a continuous backdrop of inner
silence or silence of the heart. It bids us consider every
dimension of our human makeup in the light of Jesus Christ, the New
Man. It embraces a three-fold movement of contemplation, communion
, and mission. It focuses not only on human actions and the virtues
needed to perform them, but also on the attitudes we must have to
sustain the options we have chosen to direct us."

Each of the six chapters ends with a series of questions entitled
"Contemplating the Face of Christ" and a section on how one might
follow the promptings of the Spirit.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- The Mystery . . .

A man takes his place in the theater, but his seat is too far from
the stage. He whispers to the usher, "This is a mystery, and I have
to watch a mystery close up. Get me a better seat, and I'll give
you a handsome tip."

The usher moves him into the second row, and the man hands the
usher a quarter. Yep. 25 cents.

The usher looks at the quarter in his hand, leans over and
whispers, "The wife did it."
