SPIRITUAL GROWTH RESOURCE FOR LENT
- The Five Consents: Co-operating with the Spirit to grow in Grace
http://shalomplace.com/inetmin/fiveconsents/index.html
Open registration; free-will donation requested.
Although there are many invitations from God that break into our
lives, we can identify five basic areas that are common to all of
us, and which are ongoing:
1. To life, and living to the full (Jn 10: 10)
- the invitation to hope.
2. To God's providential care (Mt 6: 25-34)
- the invitation of faith.
3. To loving service (Jn 13: 6-17)
- the invitation to love.
4. To hardship, suffering and death (Mt 16: 24-25)
- to carry our crosses.
5. To the present moment (2 Cor 6: 2)
- to resurrection life.
Each of these invitations are extended in many ways throughout our
lives, and sometimes one takes more precedence than the others.
Consenting to all is necessary, however, if one is to grow in grace.
Those who sign up for this Internet retreat will receive
reflections on the consents listed above with practical suggestions
for practicing them. There will be 35 reflections in all -- 7 for
each consent. The first will be sent the day following your
registration and will continue, usually every day or two, until you
have received them all.

WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Jer 11:18-20; Ps 7:2-3, 9bc-10, 11-12; Jn 7:40-53
Sunday: Ez 37:12-14; Ps 130:1-8; Rom 8:8-11; Jn 11:1-45
R. (7) With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption.
Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD;
LORD, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
to my voice in supplication.
If you, O LORD, mark iniquities,
LORD, who can stand?
But with you is forgiveness,
that you may be revered.
I trust in the LORD;
my soul trusts in his word.
More than sentinels wait for the dawn,
let Israel wait for the LORD.
For with the LORD is kindness
and with him is plenteous redemption;
And he will redeem Israel
from all their iniquities.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Jehovah
An anglicized pronunciation of the Hebrew tetragrammaton, YHWH,
which are the four consonant letters used to spell Gods name in the
Old Testament (Exodus 3:14). The Hebrews considered the name of God
too holy to pronounce and substituted the word Lord (adonai) when
the text was read. The vowels of the word adonai was combined with
YHWH to get the word Jehovah which was first used in the 12th
century. A more accurate pronunciation of YHWH would be Yahweh.
However, the exact and proper pronunciation has been lost.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Stanislaus (1030-1079): April 11
Anyone who reads the history of Eastern Europe cannot help but
chance on the name of Stanislaus, the saintly but tragic bishop of
Kraków, patron of Poland. He is remembered with Saints Thomas More
and Thomas Becket for vigorous opposition to the evils of an unjust
government.
Born in Szczepanow near Kraków on July 26, 1030, he was ordained a
priest after being educated in the cathedral schools of Gniezno,
then capital of Poland, and at Paris. He was appointed preacher and
archdeacon to the bishop of Kraków, where his eloquence and example
brought about real conversion in many of his penitents, both clergy
and laity. He became bishop of Kraków in 1072.
During an expedition against the Grand Duchy of Kiev, Stanislaus
became involved in the political situation of Poland. Known for his
outspokenness, he aimed his attacks at the evils of the peasantry
and the king, especially the unjust wars and immoral acts of King
Boleslaus II.
The king first excused himself, then made a show of penance, then
relapsed into his old ways. Stanislaus continued his open
opposition in spite of charges of treason and threats of death,
finally excommunicating the king. The latter, enraged, ordered
soldiers to kill the bishop. When they refused, the king killed him
with his own hands.
Forced to flee to Hungary, Boleslaus supposedly spent the rest of
his life as a penitent in the Benedictine abbey in Osiak.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Sing a New Song: The Christian Vocation," by Timothy Radcliffe OP.
Templegate Publishers, 1999.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0872432475/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
Radcliffe was elected Master General of the Dominican Order in 1992
and served the Order very well in that capacity. After his term was
over, he continued to offer writings and teachings that benefitted
many with his clarity, depth, and wisdom. This book contains a
series of his letters and addresses to the Order and to the world
in general. He shares some of his most exciting and the darkest
moments in his travels to keep in contact with the members of the
Order throughout the world. He shares the tragic and the saddest,
the powerful and the humble incidents, he found in the ministries
of the Dominicans. All the while he continued to encourage and
broaden the views of members in new and untried ways of doing
ministry. He gives rich insights on religious life and on the
apostolic calling of all believers.
Radcliffe writes with a certain lightness and a sense of humor
which makes this book a treasure for the world as he presents the
truth in a fresh voice that is both strong and vibrant. The four
main divisions of the book are:
a) The Gospel in the world where he compares the movie Jurassic
Park with the Eucharist
b) Letters to the Dominican Order where he gives new meanings to
the religious vows
c) Identity of religious life in which he discusses the sense of
religious life today
d) Living the Gospel where he discusses the truth he found in such
darkness as Iraq and the meaning of the rosary in his personal life.
In the introduction Father Timothy tells the readers that religious
life has meaning only if it says something about the meaning of
human life. "Our vocation is to shed some light on the human
vocation. If we do not, we are wasting our time". This book sheds
such light and encouragement for religious and laity to begin
singing a "NEW SONG".

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- A nutty joke
What's with the nuts?
A guy goes into a bar. He's sitting on the stool, enjoying his
drink when he hears, "You look great!" He looks around - there's
nobody near him. He hears the voice again, "No really, you look
terrific."
The guy looks around again. Nobody. He hears, "Is that a new shirt
or something? Because you are absolutely glowing!" He then realizes
that the voice is coming from a dish of nuts on the bar.
"Hey," the guy calls to the bartender, "What's with the nuts?"
"Oh," the bartender answers, "They're complimentary."
