SPIRITUAL GROWTH RESOURCE FOR LENT
- The Five Consents: Co-operating with the Spirit to grow in Grace
http://shalomplace.com/inetmin/fiveconsents/index.html
Open registration; free-will donation requested.
Although there are many invitations from God that break into our
lives, we can identify five basic areas that are common to all of
us, and which are ongoing:
1. To life, and living to the full (Jn 10: 10)
- the invitation to hope.
2. To God's providential care (Mt 6: 25-34)
- the invitation of faith.
3. To loving service (Jn 13: 6-17)
- the invitation to love.
4. To hardship, suffering and death (Mt 16: 24-25)
- to carry our crosses.
5. To the present moment (2 Cor 6: 2)
- to resurrection life.
Each of these invitations are extended in many ways throughout our
lives, and sometimes one takes more precedence than the others.
Consenting to all is necessary, however, if one is to grow in grace.
Those who sign up for this Internet retreat will receive
reflections on the consents listed above with practical suggestions
for practicing them. There will be 35 reflections in all -- 7 for
each consent. The first will be sent the day following your
registration and will continue, usually every day or two, until you
have received them all.

WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Ez 37:21-28; Jer 31:10, 11-12, 13; Jn 11:45-56
Sunday: Is 50:4-7; Ps 22:8-9, 17-18, 19-20, 23-24; Phil
2:6-11; Mt 26:14 - 27:66
R. (2a) My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?
All who see me scoff at me;
they mock me with parted lips, they wag their heads:
"He relied on the LORD; let him deliver him,
let him rescue him, if he loves him."
Indeed, many dogs surround me,
a pack of evildoers closes in upon me;
They have pierced my hands and my feet;
I can count all my bones.
They divide my garments among them,
and for my vesture they cast lots.
But you, O LORD, be not far from me;
O my help, hasten to aid me.
I will proclaim your name to my brethren;
in the midst of the assembly I will praise you:
"You who fear the LORD, praise him;
all you descendants of Jacob, give glory to him;
revere him, all you descendants of Israel!"

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Jesus Seminar
The Jesus Seminar is a group of around 150 people, including
scholars, who meet to discuss the historical Jesus. It was founded
in 1985 by the late Robert Funk and John Dominic Crossan. They
meet and vote with colored beads to decide which sayings of Jesus
are authentic and which are not. They seek to find the "authentic"
sayings of Christ.
The groups is liberal that denies Jesus' deity and substitutionary
atonement. They also deny the sufficiency of the Bible and
consider extra-biblical resources as equally or more valid than New
Testament documents.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Anselm (1033-1109): April 21
Indifferent toward religion as a young man, Anselm became one of
the Church's greatest theologians and leaders. He received the
title "Father of Scholasticism" for his attempt to analyze and
illumine the truths of faith through the aid of reason.
At 15, Anselm wanted to enter a monastery, but was refused
acceptance because of his father's opposition. Twelve years later,
after careless disinterest in religion and years of worldly living,
he finally fulfilled his desire to be a monk. He entered the
monastery of Bec in Normandy, three years later was elected prior
and 15 years later was unanimously chosen abbot.
Considered an original and independent thinker, Anselm was admired
for his patience, gentleness and teaching skill. Under his
leadership, the abbey of Bec became a monastic school, influential
in philosophical and theological studies.
During these years, at the community's request, Anselm began
publishing his theological works, comparable to those of St.
Augustine. His best-known work is the book Cur Deus Homo ("Why God
Became Man").
At 60, against his will, Anselm was appointed archbishop of
Canterbury in 1093. His appointment was opposed at first by
England's King William Rufus and later accepted. Rufus persistently
refused to cooperate with efforts to reform the Church.
Anselm finally went into voluntary exile until Rufus died in 1100.
He was then recalled to England by Rufus's brother and successor,
Henry I. Disagreeing fearlessly with Henry over the king's
insistence on investing England's bishops, Anselm spent another
three years in exile in Rome.
His care and concern extended to the very poorest people; he
opposed the slave trade. Anselm obtained from the national council
at Westminster the passage of a resolution prohibiting the sale of
human beings.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"A Joyful Noise: a monastic approach to the psalms," by William
Meninger. Paulist Press, 2010.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0809146878/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
This book shows the traditional approach to how to interpret the
psalms and reaches back to the early desert fathers and mothers,
also giving directions for the practice of lectio divina. Catholics
recognize the Psalter as the Church's official prayer book.
The psalms express a variety of human thoughts, emotions,
sufferings, aspirations, gratitude, and even despair. The trip
through the 150 psalms expresses praise, joys, and sorrows.
The author states that the psalms are co-authored by God, and for
over 1300 years have given expression to the emotions, desires,
traumas, and ecstasies of God's people. Psalms can be approached on
three levels of meaning:
a) Literal...what the author intended
b) Christological...how the text can be applied to Christ and His
Church
c) Moral...how the text can be applied to the reader
The author tries in this book to show the psalms as divinely
inspired witnesses to the events of our daily lives. The book
containing all 150 psalms is divided into five groupings, not
accord to specific topics, but in their usual numerical listing.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Frozen faces
Finding one of her students making faces at others on the
playgroung, Ms. Smith stopped to gently reprove the child. Smiling
sweetly, the Sunday School teacher said " Bobby, when I was a child
I was told if that if I made ugly faces, my face would freeze and
stay like that".
Bobby looked up and replied, "Well, Ms. Smith, you can't say you
weren't warned."
