MESSAGE OF THE DAY

Let every one consider what his weak point is; in that is his
trial. His trial is not in those things which are easy to him, but
in that one thing, in those several things, whatever they are, in
which to do his duty is against his nature. Never think yourself
safe because you do your duty in ninety-nine points; it is the
hundredth which is to be the ground of your self-denial. It is with
reference to this you must watch and pray; pray continually for
God's grace to help you, and watch with fear and trembling lest you
fall. Oh that you may (as it were) sweep the house diligently to
discover what you lack of the full measure of obedience! for, be
quite sure, that this apparently small defect will influence your
whole spirit and judgment in all things.
- John Henry Newman

(What might that "one thing" be for you? How does this help you
grow in the Spirit?)

LECTIONARY READINGS FOR THE DAY
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Gn 17:3-9; Ps 105:4-5, 6-7, 8-9; Jn 8:51-59

R. (8a) The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.

Look to the LORD in his strength;
seek to serve him constantly.
Recall the wondrous deeds that he has wrought,
his portents, and the judgments he has uttered.

You descendants of Abraham, his servants,
sons of Jacob, his chosen ones!
He, the LORD, is our God;
throughout the earth his judgments prevail.

He remembers forever his covenant
which he made binding for a thousand generations -
Which he entered into with Abraham
and by his oath to Isaac.

MEDITATION ON THE GOSPEL
- from "Daily Bread"
http://www.preacherexchange.com/daily_bread.htm

"On your part, you and your descendants after you must keep my
covenant throughout the ages."

God promised an everlasting pact with Abraham and his descendants.
We're the continuation of the covenant. If we have confidence in
fulfillment of the promise, we'll receive blessings to rival those
bestowed upon Abraham: release from oppression, freedom, eternal
life.

"God of Abraham, help us to make our own promise, a new covenant
with you, we pray."

SPIRITUAL READING
- "Imitation of Christ," by Thomas A. Kempis

- The Disciple

Who, indeed, can humbly approach the fountain of sweetness and not
carry away a little of it? Or who, standing before a blazing fire
does not feel some of its heat? You are a fountain always filled
with superabundance! You are a fire, ever burning, that never fails!
