SPIRITUAL GROWTH RESOURCE FOR LENT
- The Five Consents: Co-operating with the Spirit to grow in Grace
http://shalomplace.com/inetmin/fiveconsents/index.html
Open registration; free-will donation requested.
Although there are many invitations from God that break into our
lives, we can identify five basic areas that are common to all of
us, and which are ongoing:
1. To life, and living to the full (Jn 10: 10)
- the invitation to hope.
2. To God's providential care (Mt 6: 25-34)
- the invitation of faith.
3. To loving service (Jn 13: 6-17)
- the invitation to love.
4. To hardship, suffering and death (Mt 16: 24-25)
- to carry our crosses.
5. To the present moment (2 Cor 6: 2)
- to resurrection life.
Each of these invitations are extended in many ways throughout our
lives, and sometimes one takes more precedence than the others.
Consenting to all is necessary, however, if one is to grow in grace.
Those who sign up for this Internet retreat will receive
reflections on the consents listed above with practical suggestions
for practicing them. There will be 35 reflections in all -- 7 for
each consent. The first will be sent the day following your
registration and will continue, usually every day or two, until you
have received them all.

WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Mi 7:14-15, 18-20; Ps 103:1-2, 3-4, 9-12; Lk
15:1-3, 11-32
Sunday: Ex 17:3-7; Ps 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9; Rom 5:1-2, 5-8;
Jn 4:5-42
R. (8) If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Come, let us sing joyfully to the LORD;
let us acclaim the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us joyfully sing psalms to him.
Come, let us bow down in worship;
let us kneel before the LORD who made us.
For he is our God,
and we are the people he shepherds, the flock he guides.
Oh, that today you would hear his voice:
"Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,
as in the day of Massah in the desert,
Where your fathers tempted me;
they tested me though they had seen my works."

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Intermediate State
The period between death and resurrection. The condition of the
person in the intermediate state is debated. One theory is that the
person is without a body, yet is conscious, and that he will
receive his body at the resurrection. Another theory states that
the person has a different sort of spiritual body that will be lost
at the resurrection when body and soul are reunited (2 Cor. 5:1-4).

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- March 30
St. Peter Regalado (1390-1456), March 30
Peter lived at a very busy time. The Great Western Schism
(1378-1417) was settled at the Council of Constance (1414-1418).
France and England were fighting the Hundred Years' War, and in
1453 the Byzantine Empire was completely wiped out by the loss of
Constantinople to the Turks. At Peter's death the age of printing
had just begun in Germany, and Columbus's arrival in the New World
was less than 40 years away.
Peter came from a wealthy and pious family in Valladolid, Spain. At
the age of 13, he was allowed to enter the Conventual Franciscans.
Shortly after his ordination, he was made superior of the friary in
Aguilar. He became part of a group of friars who wanted to lead a
life of greater poverty and penance. In 1442 he was appointed head
of all the Spanish Franciscans in his reform group.
Peter led the friars by his example. A special love of the poor and
the sick characterized Peter. Miraculous stories are told about his
charity to the poor. For example, the bread never seemed to run out
as long as Peter had hungry people to feed. Throughout most of his
life, Peter went hungry; he lived only on bread and water.
Immediately after his death on March 31, 1456, his grave became a
place of pilgrimage. Peter was canonized in 1746.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"He Still Moves Stones," by Max Lucado. Thomas Nelson, 1999.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0849921333/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
Lucado calls his book a portrait of people in the Bible whom Jesus
continually impresses and surprises. There is a crook on a cross, a
wild man in the cemetery, a five time divorcee, a grieving sister,
a father at the end of his rope, people with frequent questions.
All these characters are placed in modern day society as Lucado
tells the Bible story. Are these portraits only to amaze the
readers? No, they are historic moments in which a real God met real
pains so he could answer the question, "Does God care when I hurt?"
In this book the reader is told that the same God who spoke to
Moses, still speaks today. The God who forgave David still offer
forgiveness to his people today. The God who helped people in ages
past still comes into this world and God comes to do what humans
cannot do---move the stone away.
Each chapter begins with a section from the New Testament and then
moves to a similar incident in today's world. The stories are not
told to remind people of what Jesus DID, but what Jesus continues
to DO today. The author shows how God reacts to dashed hopes; how
he who met real pain can answer the question, "Where is God when I
hurt?" The author hopes these stories will not help us look back
in amazement, but forward with hope. "The God who spoke, still
speaks. The God who forgave still forgives. He comes to do what you
cannot. He comes to move the stones which you cannot budge. Stones
are no match for God. Not then and not now. He still moves stones."
At the end of the book there are detailed study guides for each
chapter; these make the book suitable not only for personal
reflections but also for group discussions.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- The Closer
Just as a surgeon was finishing up an operation and was about to
close, the patient awakes, sits up, and demands to know what is
going on.
"I'm about to close," the surgeon says.
The patient grabs the surgeon's hand and says, "I'm not going to
let you do that! I'll close my own incision!"
The doctor hands him the needle and thread and says, "Suture self."
(You like that? OK, here's more. . . )
1. I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me.
2. Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off?
He's all right now.
3. I'm reading a book about anti-gravity. It's impossible to put
down.
4. There was a sign on the lawn at a drug re-hab center that said
'Keep off the Grass'.
5. He drove his expensive car into a tree and found out how the
Mercedes bends.
