SPIRITUAL GROWTH RESOURCE OF THE MONTH AND FOR LENT
- The Five Consents: Co-operating with the Spirit to grow in Grace
http://shalomplace.com/inetmin/fiveconsents/index.html
Open registration; free-will donation requested.
Although there are many invitations from God that break into our
lives, we can identify five basic areas that are common to all of
us, and which are ongoing:
1. To life, and living to the full (Jn 10: 10)
- the invitation to hope.
2. To God's providential care (Mt 6: 25-34)
- the invitation of faith.
3. To loving service (Jn 13: 6-17)
- the invitation to love.
4. To hardship, suffering and death (Mt 16: 24-25)
- to carry our crosses.
5. To the present moment (2 Cor 6: 2)
- to resurrection life.
Each of these invitations are extended in many ways throughout our
lives, and sometimes one takes more precedence than the others.
Consenting to all is necessary, however, if one is to grow in grace.
Those who sign up for this Internet retreat will receive
reflections on the consents listed above with practical suggestions
for practicing them. There will be 35 reflections in all -- 7 for
each consent. The first will be sent the day following your
registration and will continue, usually every day or two, until you
have received them all.

R. (22) Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.
Upright is the word of the LORD,
and all his works are trustworthy.
He loves justice and right;
of the kindness of the LORD the earth is full.
See, the eyes of the LORD are upon those who fear him,
upon those who hope for his kindness,
To deliver them from death
and preserve them in spite of famine.
Our soul waits for the LORD,
who is our help and our shield.
May your kindness, O LORD, be upon us
who have put our hope in you.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Intelligent Design
The movement that seeks to demonstrate intelligent design from
examining biological structures and sighting irreducible complexity
and a specified complexity. Irreducible complexity deals with
the minimal requirements for biological structures that if one
component were removed, the structure would not function.
Specified complexity deals with information structures.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Catherine of Genoa (1447-1510), March 23
Going to confession one day was the turning point of Catherine's
life.
When Catherine was born, many Italian nobles were supporting
Renaissance artists and writers. The needs of the poor and the sick
were often overshadowed by a hunger for luxury and self-indulgence.
Catherine's parents were members of the nobility in Genoa. At 13
she attempted to become a nun but failed because of her age. At 16
she married Julian, a nobleman who turned out to be selfish and
unfaithful. For a while she tried to numb her disappointment by a
life of selfish pleasure.
One day in confession she had a new sense of her own sins and how
much God loved her. She reformed her life and gave good example to
Julian, who soon turned from his self-centered life of distraction.
Julian's spending, however, had ruined them financially. He and
Catherine decided to live in the Pammatone, a large hospital in
Genoa, and to dedicate themselves to works of charity there. After
Julian's death in 1497, Catherine took over management of the
hospital.
She wrote about purgatory which, she said, begins on earth for
souls open to God. Life with God in heaven is a continuation and
perfection of the life with God begun on earth.
Exhausted by her life of self-sacrifice, she died September 15,
1510, and was canonized in 1737.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Heaven is for REAL: a little boy's astounding story of his trip to
heaven and back," by Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent. Thomas Nelson,
2010.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/9780849946158/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
This is an amazing story that is sweeping the country now. People
greet one another with "Have you read about the little boy who had
an out of body experience?"
A three year old underwent a life-threatening surgery when his
appendix burst. His parents went through a terrifying long period
waiting to see if the lad would survive. During that long wait
which for the boy meant only a few moments, he experienced much of
what he called Heaven. Through the ensuing months, Colton revealed
to his astonished parents much of the time he spent with God in
heaven. He said things he could not possibly have ever known in
real life. He had descriptions of heaven that matched the Bible
exactly, even though he could not have ever read these descriptions
or heard about them from his parents.
This story from a three year old will change the way readers will
think of eternity, "offering the chance to see, and believe, like a
child."

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- The Single Guy
Man walks into a supermarket and buys: 1 bar of soap, 1 toothbrush,
1 tube toothpaste, 1 loaf of bread, 1 pint of milk, 1 single
serving cereal, 1 single serving frozen dinner.
The girl at the checkout looks at him and says "Single are you?"
The man replies very sarcastically "How did you guess?"
She replies "because you're ugly."
(Bet you didn't see that one coming. OK, yeah, it's not very nice,
so here's another one.)
- The New Dads
I was sitting in the waiting room of the hospital after my wife had
gone into labor when the nurse walked out and said to a man sitting
there, "Congratulations sir, you're the new father of twins!"
The man replied, "How about that! I work for the Minnesota Twins
baseball team." About an hour later, the same nurse entered the
waiting room and announced that Mrs. Smith had just had triplets.
Mr. Smith stood up and said, "Well, how do ya like that, I work for
3M!"
When the nurse appeared next, she told the third man that his wife
had given birth to quadruplets.
"That's amazing! I work for the Four Seasons Hotel!"
At this point the gentleman sitting next to me let out a little
strangled gasp and hurriedly got up, obviously distraught. When I
asked him if he was okay, he explained, "I think I need a breath of
fresh air." The man continued, "I'm the casting director for 101
Dalmatians."
