WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: Heb 11:1-7; Ps 145:2-3, 4-5, 10-11; Mk 9:2-13
Sunday: Lv 19:1-2, 17-18; Ps 103:1-2, 3-4, 8, 10, 12-13; 1
Cor 3:16-23; Mt 5:38-48

R. (8a) The Lord is kind and merciful.

Bless the LORD, O my soul;
and all my being, bless his holy name.
Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits.

He pardons all your iniquities,
heals all your ills.
He redeems your life from destruction,
crowns you with kindness and compassion.

Merciful and gracious is the LORD,
slow to anger and abounding in kindness.
Not according to our sins does he deal with us,
nor does he requite us according to our crimes.

As far as the east is from the west,
so far has he put our transgressions from us.
As a father has compassion on his children,
so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Inerrancy

Without error, non-errant. In Christianity, inerrancy states that
the Bible, in its original documents, is without error regarding
facts, names, dates, and any other revealed information. Inerrancy
does not extend to the copies of the biblical manuscripts.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- St. Polycarp (? - 156) February 23

Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna (modern Izmir, Turkey), disciple of St.
John the Apostle and friend of St. Ignatius of Antioch was a
revered Christian leader during the first half of the second
century.

St. Ignatius, on his way to Rome to be martyred, visited Polycarp
at Smyrna, and later at Troas wrote him a personal letter. The Asia
Minor Churches recognized Polycarp's leadership by choosing him as
a representative to discuss with Pope Anicetus the date of the
Easter celebration in Rome--a major controversy in the early Church.

Only one of the many letters written by Polycarp has been
preserved, the one he wrote to the Church of Philippi in Macedonia.

At 86, Polycarp was led into the crowded Smyrna stadium to be
burned alive. The flames did not harm him and he was finally killed
by a dagger. The centurion ordered the saint's body burned. The
"Acts" of Polycarp's martyrdom are the earliest preserved, fully
reliable account of a Christian martyr's death. He died in 156.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Father Joe: The man who saved my soul, by Tony Hendra. Random
House, 2004.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0812972341/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

This is called a true story but as one reads it, one may wonder if
it is just fiction. It is the story of a fourteen year old boy Tony
who was entangled with a married woman. The husband who was a
recent over zealous convert and filled with enthusiasm for the
faith, whisked the lad away to a far away monastery to meet Father
Joe. Scared beyond words, the boy dreamed of what horrible
punishment he might receive from Father Joe. Dungeon for a while,
fasting for days, great number of prayers, floggings, cold showers?
All these went through his mind. The time finally came when Father
Joe had time for the lad, and with great trepidation Tony entered
the presence of the feeble stammering white haired Father Joe.

Tony was asked to tell his story which he did in great detail and
with fear and trembling. The dear Benedictine priest listened
attentively and never once spoke to the lad of guilt or wrong but
only of the mercy and love of God. He offered Tony a simple
penance, and later the two went for a walk to look for the beauty
of God in creation. Greatly relieved, Tony began to breathe again
and knew he wanted to spend more time with this gentle priest. In
fact very shortly, Tony became obsessed with the idea that he
should join the monastery. Father Joe assured Tony that he was too
young and he should go home and continue with his schooling.

Over the next many years, Tony often visited his mentor, Father
Joe , and found new meanings in life through the gentle words of a
simple Benedictine priest. Indeed Father Joe saved Tony from
drugs, infidelity, professional disaster, a failed marriage, and
offered guidance toward a successful marriage and fatherhood.

This book is a page turner and inspiration exudes from every page.
