WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Heb 9:2-3, 11-14; Ps 47:2-3, 6-7, 8-9; Mk 3:20-21
Sunday: Is 8:23-9:3-1; Ps 27:1, 4, 13-14; 1 Cor 1:10-13,
17; Mt 4:12-23
R. (1a) The Lord is my light and my salvation.
The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom should I fear?
The LORD is my life's refuge;
of whom should I be afraid?
One thing I ask of the LORD;
this I seek:
To dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
That I may gaze on the loveliness of the LORD
and contemplate his temple.
I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD
in the land of the living.
Wait for the LORD with courage;
be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Impute, Imputation
To reckon to someone the blessing, curse, debt, etc. of another.
Adam's sin is imputed to all people (Rom. 5:12-21), therefore, we
are all guilty before God. Our sins were put upon, imputed, to
Jesus on the cross where He became sin on our behalf (2 Cor. 5:21)
and died with them (Isaiah 53:4-6). Therefore, our sins are
forgiven. Understanding imputation is very important. Imputation is
the means of our salvation. Our sins were put upon, imputed, to
Jesus on the cross. Our sins were "given" to Jesus. When He died on
the cross, our sins, in a sense, died with Him. The righteousness
that was His through His perfect obedience to the Father in His
complete obedience to the Law is imputed, given, to us. In short,
our sins were given to Jesus. His righteousness was given to us.
Technically speaking our sins were imputed to Jesus. His
righteousness was imputed to us.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274): January 28
By universal consent, Thomas Aquinas is the preeminent spokesman of
the Catholic tradition of reason and of divine revelation. He is
one of the great teachers of the medieval Catholic Church, honored
with the titles Doctor of the Church and Angelic Doctor.
At five he was given to the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino
in his parents' hopes that he would choose that way of life and
eventually became abbot. In 1239 he was sent to Naples to complete
his studies. It was here that he was first attracted to Aristotle's
philosophy.
By 1243, Thomas abandoned his family's plans for him and joined the
Dominicans, much to his mother's dismay. On her order, Thomas was
captured by his brother and kept at home for over a year.
Once free, he went to Paris and then to Cologne, where he finished
his studies with Albert the Great. He held two professorships at
Paris, lived at the court of Pope Urban IV, directed the Dominican
schools at Rome and Viterbo, combated adversaries of the
mendicants, as well as the Averroists, and argued with some
Franciscans about Aristotelianism.
His greatest contribution to the Catholic Church is his writings.
The unity, harmony and continuity of faith and reason, of revealed
and natural human knowledge, pervades his writings. One might
expect Thomas, as a man of the gospel, to be an ardent defender of
revealed truth. But he was broad enough, deep enough, to see the
whole natural order as coming from God the Creator, and to see
reason as a divine gift to be highly cherished.
The Summa Theologiae, his last and, unfortunately, uncompleted
work, deals with the whole of Catholic theology. He stopped work on
it after celebrating Mass on December 6, 1273. When asked why he
stopped writing, he replied, "I cannot go on.... All that I have
written seems to me like so much straw compared to what I have seen
and what has been revealed to me." He died March 7, 1274.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Lifestyle," by Karen Armstrong.
Knopf Publishers, 2010.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0307595595/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
(Note: this book is not based on the Twelve Steps of recovery
groups like Alcoholics Anonymous.)
It takes courage for a religious historian and writer of
Armstrong's stature to step out from behind the scrim of
scholarship and analysis to offer guidelines for a spiritual
practice designed to make humanity a kinder and saner species. With
the boon of the prestigious TED Prize, Armstrong (The Case for God,
2009) worked with "leading thinkers from a variety of major faiths"
to compose a Charter for Compassion, which calls for the
restoration of "compassion to the heart of religious and moral
life" in a "dangerously polarized" world. Not content with merely
stating lofty goals, however, Armstrong, a revered genius of
elucidation and synthesis, now tells the full and profound story of
altruism throughout human history. She turns to neuroscience and
tracks the evolution of our brains and our natural capacity for
empathy, and performs her signature mode of beautifully clarifying
interpretation in a mind-expanding discussion of the history of the
Golden Rule ("Always treat others as you would wish to be treated
yourself"), the essence of compassion and the kernel of every
religious tradition. Exquisite and affecting explications of
Buddhist, Confucian, Judaic, Christian, and Islamic commentary
prepare the ground for meditation exercises meant to engender
"open-mindedness" and the cultivation of compassion, making for the
most sagacious and far-reaching 12-step program ever.

Creative Commons
- http://creativecommons.org/
Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organization headquartered in
San Francisco, California, United States devoted to expanding the
range of creative works available for others to build upon legally
and to share. The organization has released several
copyright-licenses known as Creative Commons licenses free of
charge to the public. These licenses allow creators to communicate
which rights they reserve, and which rights they waive for the
benefit of recipients or other creators. An easy to understand
one-page explanation of rights, with associated visual symbols,
explains the specifics of each Creative Commons license. This
simplicity distinguishes Creative Commons from an all-rights
reserved copyright. Creative Commons was invented to create a more
flexible copyright model, replacing "all rights reserved" with
"some rights reserved". Wikipedia is one of the notable web-based
projects using one of its licenses.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Bungee Jumping
Zeke and Zeb decided to build a Bungee Jumping tower in Cabo San
Lucas, Mexico to see if it would make them some money. After they
got it set up, they noticed that the crowds gathered around but
nobody was buying tickets.
Zeke said to Zeb, "Maybe you should demonstrate it to them so they
get the idea." After Zeb was strapped on he jumped and fell almost
to the ground before springing back.
As he came back up Zeke noticed that his cloths were torn and
wondered what that was all about.
Zeb went down again and this time when he came back up Zeke noticed
that he was bleeding. Zeke thought, "Wow, what's going on here."
Zeb went down a third time and this time when he came back up Zeke
noticed that he had blood, contusions and cuts all over his body.
Zeke pulled Zeb in and said, "Zeb, what happened?"
Zeb groaned, "I don't know, but what's a pinata??
