WEEKEND READINGS

Heb 13:15-17, 20-21; Ps 23:1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6; Mk 6:30-34
Is 58:7-10; Ps 112:4-5, 6-7, 8-9; 1 Cor 2:1-5; Mt 5:13-16

R. (4a) The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.

Light shines through the darkness for the upright;
he is gracious and merciful and just.
Well for the man who is gracious and lends,
who conducts his affairs with justice.

He shall never be moved;
the just one shall be in everlasting remembrance.
An evil report he shall not fear;
his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD.

His heart is steadfast; he shall not fear.
Lavishly he gives to the poor;
His justice shall endure forever;
his horn shall be exalted in glory.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Imprimatur

in Roman Catholicism the imprimatur (Latin) is the designation to
"let it be printed". This is a declaration by a church authority
that the work that has been written (book, pamphlet, track, etc.),
has first received the nihil obstat (that nothing in it is
objectionable to the Catholic faith), and that it is worthy of
being printed and distributed to the members of the Roman Catholic
Church.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- St. Jerome Emiliani (1481?-1537) - February 8

A careless and irreligious soldier for the city-state of Venice,
Jerome was captured in a skirmish at an outpost town and chained in
a dungeon. In prison Jerome had a lot of time to think, and he
gradually learned how to pray. When he escaped, he returned to
Venice where he took charge of the education of his nephews--and
began his own studies for the priesthood.

In the years after his ordination, events again called Jerome to a
decision and a new lifestyle. Plague and famine swept northern
Italy. Jerome began caring for the sick and feeding the hungry at
his own expense. While serving the sick and the poor, he soon
resolved to devote himself and his property solely to others,
particularly to abandoned children. He founded three orphanages, a
shelter for penitent prostitutes and a hospital.

Around 1532 Jerome and two other priests established a
congregation, the Clerks Regular of Somasca, dedicated to the care
of orphans and the education of youth. Jerome died in 1537 from a
disease he caught while tending the sick. He was canonized in 1767.
In 1928 Pius Xl named him the patron of orphans and abandoned
children.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Why Preach: Encountering Christ in God's Word," by Peter John
Cameron OP. Ignatius Press, 2009.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1586172727/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

Although this book has been suggested for use by priests, pastors,
and seminarians, it can be very useful for laity who preach on some
occasions, such as at a Communion Service, Wake, or prayer service.

Cameron offers expert spiritual and practical helps based on the
Word of God and the challenging, encouraging, and healing presence
of Christ. He uses generously the works and examples of Pope John
Paul ll and Pope Benedict XVI, showing that effective preaching
derives from and leads to an encounter with Christ, who comes to
readers through the Scriptures.

The author wants preachers to reflect on their role in a new
dynamic way, not in a humdrum manner of simply using the words of
others which have become stale. Cameron wants his readers to adapt
a fresh and helpful vision of preaching that is aimed at being
uplifting and even practical in day to day living. Can the preacher
realize that his/her preaching can influence the listeners to make
changes in their lives, changes that are meaningful and
inspirational? Can the answer to this question provide a gentle
nudge toward better preaching?

Cameron's chapters show the Why of preaching, the method, the soul
of preaching, putting the Word into words, homiletic missteps, the
fruit of the encounter, and the habits of preaching. In his
conclusion Cameron gives the WHY of preaching.

"The aim of preaching is to tell man (sic) who he is and what he
must do to be himself. Its intention is to disclose to him the
truth about himself, that is, what he can base his life on and what
he can die for." (Pope Benedict XV1). A tall order!!!

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- What is sex?

An 8-year-old girl went to her dad, who was working in the yard.
She asked him, "Daddy, what is sex?" The father was surprised that
she would ask such a question, but decides that if she is old
enough to ask the question, then she is old enough to get a
straight answer. He proceeded to tell her all about the "birds and
the bees." When he finished explaining, the little girl was looking
at him with her mouth hanging open. The father asked her, "Why did
you ask this question?" The little girl replied, "Mom told me to
tell you that dinner would be ready in just a couple of secs."
