MESSAGE OF THE DAY
Even if we may not always understand why God allows certain things
to happen to us, we can know He is able to bring good out of evil,
and triumph out of suffering.
- Billy Graham
(What struggles are you experiencing at this time in life? What
good has God already brought forth from them? What potential goods
lie ahead?)

LECTIONARY READINGS FOR THE DAY
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Heb13:1-8; Ps 27:1, 3, 5, 8b-9; Mk 6:14-29
R. (1a) The Lord is my light and my salvation.
The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom should I fear?
The LORD is my life's refuge;
of whom should I be afraid?
Though an army encamp against me,
my heart will not fear;
Though war be waged upon me,
even then will I trust.
For he will hide me in his abode
in the day of trouble;
He will conceal me in the shelter of his tent,
he will set me high upon a rock.
Your presence, O LORD, I seek.
Hide not your face from me;
do not in anger repel your servant.
You are my helper: cast me not off.

MEDITATION ON THE SCRIPTURES
- from
http://onlineministries.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/daily.html
What a graphic Gospel we have today. It seems almost Barbaric to
literally want "the head of John the Baptist" and then to display
such a violent act... "Behead him in the prison... and brought in the
head on a platter." I can't imagine how Herodias could have had
such hatred or fear of John the Baptist, that she would influence
her daughter to request such violence from Herod.
Today's Gospel refers to John the Baptist as a "righteous and holy
man", a man who suffered being true to his calling and his mission
in life. Maybe what we take away from today's Gospel is that it
may not be easy or uncomplicated living our authentic life... but
that we must.

SPIRITUAL READING
- Fenelon's "Maxims of the Saints"
It does not follow, that those who possess the graces of a truly
sanctified heart, are at liberty to reject the ordinary methods and
rules of perception and judgment. They exercise and value wisdom,
while they reject the selfishness of wisdom. The rules of holy
living would require them every moment to make a faithful use of
all the natural light of reason, as well as the higher and
spiritual light of grace.
