SPIRITUAL GROWTH RESOURCE OF THE MONTH

"Handbook for Spiritual Directees"
- see http://shalomplace.com/view/handbook.html

"Handbook for Spiritual Directees" is a collection of spiritual
exercises that can be used by directees to stimulate reflection and
discussion in spiritual direction. Spiritual directors will also
find it a helpful resource in their ministry of supporting and
guiding directees. Of course, anyone interested in spiritual growth
can also make good use of this material, even if they are not in a
formal, spiritual direction relationship.

Some of the exercises included in this work include:
* Preparing for Spiritual Direction
* Methods of Prayer
* Faith History
* Guidelines for Discernment
* How to Drop an Attachment or Addiction
* Knowing Your Spiritual Pathways
* Writing Your Mission Statement
* Rule or Way of Life
And many more . . .

WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: Nm 6:22-27; Ps 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8; Gal 4:4-7; Lk
2:16-21
Sunday: Is 60:1-6; Ps 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, 12-13; Eph 3:2-3a,
5-6; Mt 2:1-12

R. (cf. 11) Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.

O God, with your judgment endow the king,
and with your justice, the king's son;
He shall govern your people with justice
and your afflicted ones with judgment.

Justice shall flower in his days,
and profound peace, till the moon be no more. May he rule from sea
to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth.

The kings of Tarshish and the Isles shall offer gifts;
the kings of Arabia and Seba shall bring tribute.
All kings shall pay him homage,
all nations shall serve him.

For he shall rescue the poor when he cries out,
and the afflicted when he has no one to help him.
He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor;
the lives of the poor he shall save.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Image of God

The image of God is generally held to mean that people contain
within their nature elements that reflect God's nature: compassion,
reason, love, hate, patience, kindness, self-awareness, etc. Man
was made in the image of God (Gen. 1:26). Though we have a physical
image, it does not mean that God has one. Rather, God is spirit
(John 4:24), not flesh and bones (Luke 24:39).

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- St. John Neumann (January 5): 1811-1860

Perhaps because the United States got a later start in the history
of the world, it has relatively few canonized saints, but their
number is increasing.

John Neumann was born in what is now the Czech Republic. After
studying in Prague, he came to New York at 25 and was ordained a
priest. He did missionary work in New York until he was 29, when he
joined the Redemptorists and became its first member to profess
vows in the United States. He continued missionary work in
Maryland, Virginia and Ohio, where he became popular with the
Germans.

At 41, as bishop of Philadelphia, he organized the parochial school
system into a diocesan one, increasing the number of pupils almost
twentyfold within a short time.

Gifted with outstanding organizing ability, he drew into the city
many teaching communities of sisters and the Christian Brothers.
During his brief assignment as vice provincial for the
Redemptorists, he placed them in the forefront of the parochial
movement.

Well-known for his holiness and learning, spiritual writing and
preaching, on October 13, 1963, John Neumann became the first
American bishop to be beatified. Canonized in 1977, he is buried in
St. Peter the Apostle Church in Philadelphia.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Dreams: God's Forgotten Language," by John Sanford. HarperOne.
1989.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/006067055X/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

First published twenty years ago, this revised edition of John
Sanford's classic exploration of the psychological and spiritual
significance of dreams draws on the work of C.G. Jung to show how
dreams can help us find healing and wholeness and reconnect us to a
living spiritual world.

Featuring a new preface by the author and using case histories from
his own experience as a counselor, Dreams traces the role of dreams
in the Bible, analyzing their nature and examining how Christians,
through fear and the constraints of dogma, have come to reject the
visions through which God speaks to humanity, making dreams -- in
Sanford's words -- "God's forgotten language."

- New Year's Day Prayer for One and All

Dear Lord

So far this year I've done well.

I haven't gossiped, I haven't lost my temper, I haven't been
greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or overindulgent. I'm very thankful
for that. But in a few minutes, Lord, I'm going to get out of bed,
and from then on I'm probably going to need a lot more help.

Amen

Jemima was taking an afternoon nap on New Year's Eve before the
festivities. After she woke up, she confided to Max, her husband,
'I just dreamed that you gave me a diamond ring for a New Year's
present. What do you think it all means?'

'Aha, you'll know tonight,' answered Max smiling broadly.

At midnight, as the New Year was chiming, Max approached Jemima and
handed her small package. Delighted and excited she opened it
quickly. There in her hand rested a book entitled: 'The meaning of
dreams'.
