MESSAGE OF THE DAY

This was the fulness of time, when Christ Jesus did come, that the
Messiah should come.
It was so to the Jews, and it was so to the Gentiles too...
Christ hath excommunicated no nation, no shire, no house, no man;
He gives none of His ministers leave to say to any man, thou art
not redeemed; He gives no wounded or afflicted conscience leave to
say to itself, I am not redeemed.
... John Donne (1573-1631)

LECTIONARY READINGS FOR THE DAY
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Mal 3:1-4, 23-24; Ps 25:4-5ab, 8-9, 10 and 14; Lk 1:57-66

R. (see Luke 21:28) Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is
near at hand.

Your ways, O LORD, make known to me;
teach me your paths,
Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my savior.

Good and upright is the LORD;
thus he shows sinners the way.
He guides the humble to justice,
he teaches the humble his way.

All the paths of the LORD are kindness and constancy
toward those who keep his covenant and his decrees.
The friendship of the LORD is with those who fear him,
and his covenant, for their instruction.

MEDITATION ON THE GOSPEL
from "Praying the Daily Gospels," by Philip St. Romain:

- Luke 1:57-66 (Zecbariah names his son)
Jews believed that a person's name influenced the development of
his or her character. They believed that to know a person's name
was to have entry into that person's soul. The story of the naming
of John the Baptist points out the influence of God in the life of
this last Jewish prophet.

- How did you get your name? What qualities of character does your
name suggest to you?

- Look in the mirror sometime today and tell yourself, "God doesn't
make junk." Smile at yourself and pray for the grace to love
yourself.

- Spend some time with the passage "The hand of the Lord was [is]
with him [me]."

SPIRITUAL READING
- "Imitation of Christ," by Thomas A. Kempis

- The Disciple

Very great, too, is the difference between the Ark of the Covenant
with its treasures and Your most pure Body with its ineffable
virtues, between these sacrifices of the law which were but figures
of things to come and the true offering of Your Body which was the
fulfillment of all ancient sacrifices.

Why, then, do I not long more ardently for Your adorable presence?
Why do I not prepare myself with greater care to receive Your
sacred gifts, since those holy patriarchs and prophets of old, as
well as kings and princes with all their people, have shown such
affectionate devotion for the worship of God?
